I had a question about the bottling process. I want to use beer bottles to bottle a homemade whiskey sauce (not beer!) to give away, and I'm struggling to figure out how to recap them. We will be using pre-used beer bottles that have been cleaned. Could we also use pre-used caps or do we need to buy new caps? Should they be twist off or pop off? Thanks guys!

We don't have a capper yet, this is all totally new to us. Do you have a reccommendation for a capper? Our biggest concern is cost. We are both bartenders thus we can get free used beer bottles (after cleaning and sanitizing of course). It will actually be a give away to our guests at our wedding reception. It is a sauce that needs refrigeration so I'm not so worried about it "keeping" as I am about it staying inside the bottle without leaking. We can keep it cold until our guests are ready for transport.

This is a common wing capper...It's the one I use. Get new bottle caps and sanitize them before capping. Clean and sanitize all bottles as well. If you get crown caps (pop-offs) you will have to use appropriate bottles. You can't use twist-off bottles with these caps.

My thought is that your guests will get 1 use out of these bottles unless they have a capper and more caps..you can't really reseal with an old cap that was popped off. I agree that you would be better off using mason jars or something that is resealable.

I'd use pint-size Mason jars, like the kind used for jams, jellies & such. They can be resealed & are more appropriate for sauces.

Use tasting corks like these:

Your local homebrew/wine store should have them.
You'll be able to pour out some BBQ sauce and just put the stopper back in.
No capper required.
I'd use clear glass bottles if you can get some. Mix up a bucket of warm water and a 1/2 cup or more baking soda and put your bottles in, if the labels don't come right off, use bottles from a different beer.

For $30 you can get a case of 12 clear 12 oz bottles with flip top serving caps.
A little pricey, but nice for gifts:

Lots of other bottle options on amazon including case of 5 oz bottles for $12.
