I am attempting to try my hand at creating an IPA recipe to utilize some of my Belma hops that I picked up this year in addition to some of my Centennial I have in stock. I really enjoy balanced IPAs that lean towards the Citrus flavor profile. I also like there to be a balanced malt backbone with a touch of sweetness being ok. I have Centennial, Belma, Chinook, and Warrior in my inventory but I wasn't sure how they would all play with the new Belma hops. How does this look for a first stab? I plan on mashing at 154 to not dry it out completely. In addition I have added some Cara-Pils for some head retention/body. The acid malt is there because I plan on brewing with RO water and adjusting my water profile following the Basic Water Chemistry primer. I plan on deciding between US-04, 05, or the new BRY-97 dry yeasts.

Hops look good, but I prefer less crsytal in my IPAs. Cara-pils and honey malt should be treated as crystal malts. You've got about 10% there, which will be pretty sweet with the honey malt. That's up to you.

I agree with daksin the crystal malts look a bit high but if youre ok with a little sweetness go for it. I have never used belma hops and I dont know thier flavor profile but If you like the citrus finish consider crystal hops they have somehow managed to sqeeze a grapefruit into a hop cone :)

So maybe if I drop the honey malt to 6 ounces and the Crystal 60 to 4 oz that would be better? Or would I be better served dropping the Cara-Pils a bit and leaving the other 2? I do like a little sweetness, but I don't want it to be cloying.

I don't think you really need any of the carapils. It's flavor contribution is pretty small and you'll have plenty of head retention without it.

For your goals, mash at 154 F and...

11 lbs Maris Otter 84.2 % (Adjust as needed to meet specs below)
8.0 oz CaraPils 3.8 % (Remove)
8.0 oz Honey Malt 3.8 % (Keep at same %)
8.0 oz Munich Malt 3.8 % (Increase to 6-7%)
5.0 oz Crystal 60L 2.4 % (Keep at same % or increase slightly)
4.0 oz Acid Malt 1.9 % (Keep at same %)

30 IBUs Belma @ 60 min
1.00 oz Belma @ 15 min
1.00 oz Centennial @ 15 min
1.00 oz Belma @ 0 min
1.00 oz Centennial @ 0 min
2.00 oz Belma Dryhop 7 Days
2.00 oz Centennial Dryhop 7 Days

Thanks for the suggestions. Based on input I have updated to the following:
I hope to give this a shot early next week after my new Monster MM2-2.0 arrives! :)

I brewed this today. I just got my new monster mm2-2.0 and was having a problem holding the gap setting, so my efficiency was a tiny bit low. I hit 1.060 og and it's sitting in the fermentation chamber at 64 now. I will update when it is ready!
