Any thoughts on a culprit? Saw some little black insects around the rim of the container on one of them but too small to take a picture with my phone. What do I do about this? Also not awesome that they are growing in the middle of the worst month of rainfall in nearly a century here in north texas...

Meanwhile, we almost had the driest May on record here, with today's heavy rains moving us towards second driest.

I'm going to go with caterpillar damage in your case.
Look for tiny black fuzzy bastids.

Generally, winged critters aren't big eaters. Their larvae are what does the most damage...

Cheers!
