Am I doomed to an exploding fermenter?

I ended up with more wort than anticipated. I put ~6 gallons @ 1.078 in a 6.5 gallon bucket, with a blowoff tube. That corresponds to maybe 2 inches of head room. How worried should I be?

Don't worry. As long as you're using a blow off tube, you should be fine.

Just make sure your collection bucket for the blow off is large enough. Only need to worry if your blow off tube is very small diameter and gets plugged.

Less blow off if you keep the fermenting wort from getting to warm.

You might want to get a Rubbermaid tub that holds your fermenter and blow off vessel. It will catch any drippings in case your lid doesn't have a 100% seal. When things get a little crazy in the bucket, I've had some lid leakage.
