In a little less than eight weeks I am taking a cruise to Europe and will fly back afterwards. Heading to places like Marseilles, Madeira, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.
Any advice on bring wine back in the checked luggage? Products geared just for that? I came across these... http://www.winestuff.com/wine-carry...ry-bags/wine-skin-breast-cancer-research.html

But I am thinking there has to be a collapsible box I can pack and form into shape as I stash my bottles for their trip home.

Thoughts, comments?

Thanks,
Sara

Well.... I brought back a bottle of champagne from Mexico after my honeymoon and just put it in a ziplock and smashed it nice and snug between all my clothes.. The bottle was completely fine, no issues... Though that was just one bottle... :-/ Wish I had a better answer for you...

Oh, as a second I do believe that it is illegal to do that... but don't quote me on that.

Sara,

Every time that I have brought back alcohol I have wrapped the bottle in a t shirt and tied it in my shoe for extra support. I have yet to have a bottle break that way.

I've put each bottle in a couple of socks (or one thick wool sock if you're going someplace cold), and then put 'em in gallon ziplocks (separately). I've only had four or five in a suitcase at a time, but it seems to work.

I just want to be extra cautious because we are staying over in Barcelona, staying over in Miami...there is going to be alot of jostling going on. Grabbed some 'wine diapers' off eBay, missed a Woot offer that sold six for $8. The reviews are good and they will contain a spill by absorbing the liquid plus they are reuseable.

Those 'wine diapers' should work fine for a few bottles per suitcase.

If you end up wanting to get more wine the wineries should have some decent packing options for a separate checked bag or should be at least able to direct you where to get some in town.

I've check six bottles in a styrofoam wine shipper that a winery provided for free when I bought the wine before with no issues and no worries about soaking my clothes. It was similar to one of these:

Another option:

A lot of the wine shops will pack them in bubblewrap and cardboard for you. I also try to bring a roll of bubble wrap with me just in case. I've never had a problem even when I just used my clothes but the wine diaper sounds like a great idea for piece of mind. Another option is to have the wine shop Fedex it to your home. This can be expensive but your luggage is going to be overwieght anyway so the cost may be comparable.

I travel internationally quite a bit to Argentina and New Zealand. I see a lot of people bring wine back from both places. There's usually one or two people on the group who lose a bottle in transit. These are the best out there: http://www.aerocellpkg.com/applications/wine

You can usually buy them at wineries or high end wine shops. I have put bottles in socks and then into my mountaineering boots with great luck, but now I have a couple of aerocell things and use those. Wine skins work alright too, but I've seen a bottle in an aerocell drop from 4 feet to the floor and it just bounces around.

Unfortunately the aerocell require an inflation kit. Might be great for wineries to bag wine for shipment but does not appear feasible for the traveler.
