I'm making a big 1.104 Imperial porter and using WLP007, and anticipating big head. I use buckets, and don't want to rig up some blowoff apparatus, but don't want 'splosions. Is there any reason I shouldn't split the 10-11g between three 6g buckets? This should give tons of headspace for the yeast, and I'm guessing I could use regular airlocks.

Anyone?

In my limited experience bigger beers krausen less vigorously, but maybe I just under pitched on my 1.090 batch.

Split into 3 carboys you should be ok with temp control. It looks like more cleaning tho.

Yeah, 3 buckets, why not be safe. Both for blowoff and temp as said above. Look at some youtube videos of big beers blowing off, and I think you'll go with 3 buckets. Besides, primary ferm doesn't really care how much headspace you've got (to a point).
