Witbier Blue Balls Belgian Wit (Blue Moon Clone)

haha for sure. You can't see it in the picture but I have one on there. The krausen didn't quite rise to the neck and it's already subsided. I was sad to see that beautiful golden color in the first picture turn the murky brown in this picture. But I guess the yeast have to do their thing...

Witbier Blue Balls Belgian Wit (Blue Moon Clone)

I got to brew this on Saturday. Hit the mash temps and OG on the nose! Very excited to taste this one. The stratification of the cold break and yeast was interesting to see in the carboy: This picture was taken less than 12 hours after pitching the yeast.

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

Good news! I was able to fix my carbonation for the remainder of this batch. I had to carefully pop the caps off (so I could reuse them), add about 1/2 tsp of corn sugar and recapped. Then I carefully swirled and mixed up the beer to get the yeast moving in the solution. Waited about a week...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

I aimed for about 2.0 volumes which was, I think, 1/3 cup of corn sugar in 3.5 gallons of beer.

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

Well I've always read that oils from fats may cause a no-head issue. Does anyone know how much fat it takes to ruin head in a beer? I used 1/2 the container of Hershey's Cocoa powder so that probably added about 2.5g of fat according to the Hershey's website. Although, I did have an...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

I too am seeing the issues with carbonation in bottles. My batch has been in bottles for 2 weeks today and the beer gets pretty much no head and only slightly laces the glass. I was hoping it would get better but after your post I'm not holding out much hope. At first I was thinking it was...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

I just bottled this about 15 minutes ago and I thought I'd share my notes and opinions on the peppermint flavor. I steeped 4 Celestial Seasonings Peppermint tea bags in 1 quart of water for about 5 minutes. While that was cooling I went ahead and bottled the first half (about 1.5 gallons) of...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

Wow good luck! The WLP004 has been pretty resilient for me. I had the carboy outside in my temp controlled chest freezer and when the ambient temp dropped to about 50 degrees here in FL, the carboy dropped to about 57 . I brought it inside and the gravity read 1.020. The next day the...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

Thanks! I'll do a mint tea mixture when I boil up the water for the priming sugar. I may scale the bags back to about 6 since it'll have less time to bulk age. Now I have to decide if I'm racking into secondary onto a cocoa nibs solution :D. Decisions decisions...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Andes Mint Chocolate Stout

I brewed this the other day and eyeballed about 4oz of the hersheys unsweetened chocolate. I didn't continue reading about using the mint tea bags in the boil so do you think adding a mint tea mixture at bottling time would be better than the mint extract? I've used extract before (vanilla)...

    Fermaid for beer fermentation?

So I understand that it's not necessary but would it provide any benefit over not using it? I'm thinking it would probably help the yeast finish cleaner since they'll have nutrients that they wouldn't otherwise have. Full disclosure, I'm not a biologist :)

    Fermaid for beer fermentation?

I placed an order online and got some Fermaid O for yeast nutrient, however, all of the information I have found has been for using it in big beers, meads, and wines. Is there any benefit to using this in regular (4%-7% ABV) beer fermentation? I was planning on using maybe a 1/2 dosage on a...

Not to toot my own horn but...

I made my first "GOOD" batch of beer!!! Ended up being an English Ale/Bitter (as it was a little high on the IBU's) but it actually gave me the confidence to post this on the forums haha! I got a brew kit for Christmas last year and made probably about 7 batches or so and it took me almost a...

    Another back sweeten thread

So I've been searching the forums and I can't really find a specific amount needed to back sweeten the cider I have in my primary when it comes to bottling time. I have read all the posts about splenda, lactose and apple juice concentrate and I was wondering exactly how much I would need of...

    Creatine and Yeast

    Yeast and Creatine?

Hmmm, cool! Yeah I probably won't end up trying it but wondered if anyone had or knew anything about it. Thanks for the info :)

    Yeast and Creatine?

Hello all, I've trolled the forums for several weeks now and just now became a member. I had a question regarding yeast and creatine. After a cursory web search I found that yeast is sometimes consumed by bodybuilders for extra B vitamins and protein, BUT what do you think the result is...
