    do you brew alone?

I generally brew solo. If my gf is home I might ask her to hold the sparging bag in place while I pour or she'll cap bottles as I fill them on bottling day. Once in a while I have friends over but it's rare. Like others, I've had some mishaps due to socializing on brew day instead of paying...

Adding more sulphite to wine kits?

Adding more sulphite to wine kits?

I've made several wines but I'm now using my first Wine Expert kit. Paperwork with it says they use very low amounts of sulphites and that if you plan to age the wine over 6 months you should add more. I try to keep a good size inventory so I can age a long time, all my wines age over a year...

    Use beer bottles for wine??

No problem using beer bottles. I bottle some of each wine I make in beer bottles. Usually a 6 pack. Partly to have a smaller portion for periodic tasting to check the wine's progress as it ages without using up a whole bottle. Also, so I have some smaller, 2-glass, servings for times when I...

What's your go-to brand for wine kits?

I tend to alternate between red and white to try to keep a balanced inventory. And I like a lot of different wines. For whites, my favorites are sauv blanc and pinot grigio but I also like reisling, chardonnay, gewurtstraminer.... pretty much all of it. Reds- zinfandel, cabernet, malbec &...

What's your go-to brand for wine kits?

I've been making wine from kits for about 5 years. It's all been RJ Spagnols, just because it's what I'm finding in the local shops. There haven't been any bad wines yet, all good to very good, but I want to try some different brands and I'm looking to order on line for more variety. I'm just...

    Brewery names--what's your story?

Hollow Point.... as in bullets. Cuz I'm a heavily armed gun nut.

    Developing beer names...

Well I'm kind of a gun nut and went with the name "Hollow Point", as in hollow point bullets. Thus my kitchen is the "Hollow Point Brewery and Winery." I rarely name beers but when I do I try to stick with the theme. I have some good names that are awaiting a good enough beer to get them...

Craft beer bars: the issue I have with them

Yup, Run of the Mill. The red ale is under 5% and one of my favs. But most of my favs are stronger- cask ipa, regular ipa, xpa, scottish, oatmeal stout, porter, alt....

Brewpub refused to fill my growler.

Many states have similar laws. Here in Maine the law is that a brewery or brewpub can only fill their own growlers (with state approved label), it must have the surgeon general's warning on it, it must be sealed in some way (otherwise considered an "open container" in your vehicle), growlers...

    AM drinking...

No problem at all. I think those who do have a prob with it are the ones with alcahol issues. You just got off work! You didn't just get out of bed and start your day by drinking! And that's just fine on occasion too. I bartend and have frequently had a beer or something after getting home...

Craft beer bars: the issue I have with them

That is an annoying trend. Many craft beer pubs and brewpubs are missing a good session beer. I want to be able sit down, watch a football game, drink good beer throughout and still remember it afterward. I bartend at a brewpub that makes around 25 different beers. We have 7 on at a time- 6...

    Beer Labelizer - Label Generator

Andy, you're a genius! Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm eager for the talked about upgrade to add images ourselves. Also wondering if you have any plans to adapt the program to make wine labels? I like to label my beer sometimes but I care more about having labels on my wine. I haven't...

    secondary question

It's fine to bottle now. I always use a secondary but don't disparage those who feel it's not needed. I just see it as a clarifying step and you've given it enough time to do that. If you wait too long the yeast could die off, preventing carbonation.
