    Solera guidance

Hey all, I have a final beer in my 15 gallon barrel before I move the barrel into a Solera sour project. For those who have done this, what advice would you give your future self? I'm planning on starting with a Dupontesque Saison as the beer going into the fermenter after clean fermentation...

A little low on filling a barrel

Hey all, first time using a barrel and when filling it we came up a bit short. In the 15 gallon barrel I think we got to 13 or so gallons. Lot of trub in the fermenter. We racked pretty well with little aeration. How much will the head space hurt? The barrel is mostly waxed. Just the front face...

    CF15 5 gallon batches

Creating this thread to record using the cf15 for 5ish gallon batches. Today I brewed a 6 gallon Rauchbier in my CF15 and it is working just fine so far. I moved the sample valve to a not so great position. I can't take any samples this way. I think for this to work better, I would recommend...

Spike CF15 for 5 gallon lagers

Do any Spike CF15 owners have experience doing 5 gallon lagers with it? Is the chilling coil sufficient for the fermentation (keeping in low 50s)? I have two beers in my lineup that I only want to make 5 gallons (schwarzbier and rauchbier) of. I've done a few 10 gallon lagers and it has worked...

Coconut bag it or free float

I'm planning on adding 28oz of sweetened coconut to a 10 gallon batch of cream ale. My fermentation vessel is a spike unitank. Question is: should I bag the coconut? Or, let it free float? Float Pros: - no additional equipment - can funnel through the 1.5 port Float cons - maybe a PITA to...

    Electrical element not turning on

So, I'm a bit stuck. I've gotten my brew panel all together and have been hooking everything up. The pumps work, as do the probes. I went to turn on the element on with the pid in manual mode set to 100 and nothing happens. If I have the element unplugged my indicator light is yellow. I've...

50 amp relay instead of 30 amp

So, I ordered a couple of 30 amp relays for my Kal-esque clone. I received two 50 amp relays instead. Since the 50 amp rating is for what the relay can handle as a load, does anyone see it a problem to use these instead? I still only plan on having the system power a 5500w single element.

    CSD - Cat Suppression Device

If you have cats and a keezer, here is a potential solution! This is just a mock up before I spend time to make it less ugly.

    Stir Plate Build

Well, I haven't been able to brew in a while as we will be moving into a house soon, but that has freed me up to do a stir plate build!:) shows it in action. Let me know your thoughts.

    Excellent Nut Brown

Just wanted to share this pic of my Nut Brown! It is a very good balanced beer, but the head retention is great- I blame this on the flaked barley ;-)

    Brewing Organization

Today we were out shopping for a way to organize my brewing gear. SWMBO was sick of it taking over half of the basement:cross:. So we went to Farm and Fleet and picked up a shelving unit that I had seen earlier for around 130. Today it was 85! It holds 4,000 lbs (800 a shelf), so it will...

    How tight should hardware be?

I just installed a weld-less ball valve into my brew pot and I am curious as to how snug should everything be? I have it all hand tightened and I did a leak test. 15 gallons in the pot for a half hour, and not a drop leaked.:ban: I noticed that the valve itself is not as snug as it could be...

    Longnecks or Stubbies

Okay, so here goes the question. Which bottles are better for what styles? I am an avid trier of new beers (betting most of us are:mug:) and have collected quite the collection of bottles. I am thinking of sending out gifts to my relatives and would like to use the best possible style for the...
