Tell us your odd food and beer pairings...

So every now and then you're drinking a beer and eating something and it hits you; "damn! That's good together!" I had that not long ago with a not so surprising combo of stout and a bowl of captain crunch. Today while feeding my 8 month old brewing assistant and enjoying an eisbock I all of a...

Help me better understand the concept of oxygenating wort...

So I just brewed a big RIS that'll come in at just over 10%. I don't have an oxygen bottle or even a pump and filter to inject regular air into my wort. Before I invest in such equipment I'd like to clarify a few things: My understanding is that the reason we add oxygen into the wort is so...

Colorado Nw denver; nitro setup, 6 tap tower on craigs, not mine

To be found here; http://denver.craigslist.org/for/3871007137.html Seems fair for the nitro set, slightly rich on the tower.

Purple beer by accident due to dry hopping in keg

So I tend to brew more than I can drink and brewed an IPA probably five months ago that turned out so-so. Because of that it's been sitting in a keg in my keezer without any use. I finally had to make some room for another beer and decided to check on it. Poured a glass off and it's mostly...

Why can't I find a Baltika no 8 clone??? Wheat ale

So I find it odd that a search online for a Baltika no 8 clone returns nothing (other than clones of other Baltika beers). This beer has a tendency for a wide span of reviews, some say it's terrible while others say it's right up there with the masters of hefe weizens. I'm in the second camp...

    Belgian Quad Stuck Fermentation... Options?

So we have our first stuck fermentation. We brewed a 10gal batch of a Belgian Quad to be aged in a bourbon barrel. OG was spot on at 1.090. Made a 2 step starter with WLP530 Abbey. Pitched at 68deg and let it self rise to about 75 for a day, then bumped the temp to about 80. It had a...

80's minifrezer; can this be fixed??? Help!

Let me start off by expressing my feelings right now; -"insert every curse word known to man here"-!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was getting close to finishing my Lagerator. Was really excited because I happened to score a mini freezer on Craigslist rather than a mini fridge and knew this thing was going to...

Why must starters be so large? Not understanding the concept of liter + starters

So why is it that the size of the starter is so important? If I were to take a slant of yeast and make a half liter starter with it that contains a half cup of DME in it, wouldn't I get the exact same result as a starter with 1 liter that also has a half cup of DME in it? I don't get the...

Will this fridge work for fermentation/lagering chamber?

SO... I'm supposed to pick up a fridge next weekend for my new under-the-workbench fermentation/lagering chamber. The chamber is going to be about 4.5x2ft in size with the intention of having three chambers... two for different fermenting temps and the main chamber for lagering (main chamber...

Mixed up two kegs... one needs to age more after crash cooling! Help!

So I kegged two beers and then put the wrong label on them after kegging the second beer. The first is a Saison and the second is a Porter. The Porter was supposed to sit out an extra two weeks to age a bit longer (needed it). I thought I put the Saison in the keezer, but after tapping it I...

Anybody ever use a main co2 valve in your keezer to prevent leaks?

So I was thinking... just like a sprinkler system tends to have a main valve to prevent wasted water, wouldn't it make sense to have a main valve in your gas line before the manifold to prevent leaks? I'm building a 6 tap keezer; just think of all the parts co2 can leak from; Posts on kegs x6...

Loss of bitterness (hop loss) due to hot break?

Gents, While I was brewing this weekend I noticed a lot of my hops were sticking to the side of my keggle due to the hot break that was created each time I added hops. In fact at one point I had a small boil over which left a significant amount of hop material on the top of the keggle edge...

Recirculating active fermentation... has anybody done it?

Gents (and ladies), I recently spoke to a brewer concerning the process behind making one of my favorite barley wines and he brought up something that seems to be a bit of a foreign concept to home brewers; He mentioned that it took a lot of work to get to the final gravity (13.5% abv) and to...

First all grain, help with beersmith and volumes

Hello, After brewing a few extract beers, my wife and I have decided to move to all grain. We have a 15 gallon Keggle as our BP and a 10gal cooler MT. Will be in a 6.5gal glass carboy for primary with blow off. A couple of weeks ago, we ran a gas line to the garage and converted our setup...
