    Floaters in Carboy

I wouldn’t panic yet- I’d suggest a cold crash if you have a fridge to put your carboy - or give it some time. Hello from Newfoundland !

    A heating element mystery.............

the output is 235V under load. the performance is improved significantly with a thorough scrubbing of the element..... I'll have to do a time/heat analysis later.

    A heating element mystery.............

I'll check that. My metere was on the SSR output, without the element running. The lights on the SSR's are staying on 100% of the time with 100% power output.

    A heating element mystery.............

well, it's an inexpensive component and most SSR's, when they fail, will fail open. it's simply an additional safety component to prevent boilovers.

    A heating element mystery.............

The mystery deepens. I checked the power output to the plug (the kettle has a short cord on it with a 4 prong 220v 30a plug). The output is reading 241v. There is a bit of build up on the element itself, but I can't see that cutting the power in half.

    A heating element mystery.............

I just did, it's 10.5 ohms. 10.5 ohms translates to 23 amps at 240v, 23 amps @ 240v converts to 5500 watts, roughly. so ... it may be the original power source? possible..........

    A heating element mystery.............

Ha ha, I wish it were that easy!!! It's definitely one 5500 element. My element is run by an Auber PID that feeds two solid state relays. I did replace the two solid state relays (one for each line of the 220) recently, but can't see how that would affect anything.

    A heating element mystery.............

I have been running my own little 'electric' brewery for a couple of years. My kettle has a 5500 watt 220v element in it, and I would typically bring my wort to a boil, then simmer at 40%. Recently, i noticed that it took much longer to bring my wort to a boil, and my 'simmer' required...

    March 809 Pump Question

Thanks again, I guess my bottom line question is: will the use of the 1/2" pex on both sides of the pump cause any long-term damage??

    March 809 Pump Question

true - i am not in need of moving liquid too quickly. i have a 10 gal setup. what would be a good recirculation rate? I have a cooler with a custom made false bottom, so I could potentially recirculate quickly w/o compacting ( i hope ).

    March 809 Pump Question

Thanks, i was thinking that upgrading my inlet end to 3/4 pex would be the way to go. I have the 809HS-C, so the 3/4 pex will fit right on to it.

    March 809 Pump Question

Hi Folks, I have an electric brewery setup. Recently, I upgraded to a basic RIMS setup, using coolers. My wort is transferred through Pex plumbing pipe. The pump I used was a cheap ebay pump, and it served the purpose. Alas, recently it passed away. The excitement of brewing must have been...

Dangers of using in Copper in the Mash Tun

I have used white salt/vinegar with my immersion chiller, works like a charm. If that doesn't take it off, then I don't worry about it.

Dangers of using in Copper in the Mash Tun

Hey, Thanks guys. I know that some, like Colin Kaminski, suggest you include copper in the kettle. I was just wondering if there was any dif for mashing.... I think I will go ahead and use the copper coil I already have.

Dangers of using in Copper in the Mash Tun

I have an electric brew setup (control panel with 3500w liquor tank, 5500w watt kettle, all controlled through PID's) I'm adding a recirculation setup for my mash tun; the wort will leave the mash tun, be pumped through a separate heated coil, and returned to the tank. I have copper (for my...

    Bottling wort for starters

That looks good!! I am trying the same thing. But where did you get your 15 minute number?? I have never canned before, but when I look at canning recipes they seem to indicate you need much more time for 'botulism sensitive' foods. With 'broths', which would be comparable to wort, it recommends...
