First fly sparge, stuck. 5Gal. Igloo w/false bottom

I've wondered about this. When I fly sparge at low rates I can't seem to get the grain temp to rise even when sparging with 180 deg water. It seems like the tun is loosing more heat from being open than the sparge water is providing. When I sparge quickly I get the grain bed right up to just...

How long for Hazelnut to mellow?

I had this same problem with a Hazlenut chocolate porter I brewed a couple months ago. I only used half the vial and it seemed like way too much for almost a month. It did mellow a lot though and balanced out. That or I just got used to it??? Near the end of the keg I almost wanted a little...

Electrian dad says GCFI is pointless?

If your dad is anything like my dad, he may have just left some info out to mess with your head. Maybe there is something you dont know in the mix. If you are powering this to a recepticle branched from a bathroom or any garage outlet with more than a single outlet it is already protected with...

    New All-Grain Brewer

All grain really is a lot simpler than most people make you believe. The best lessons are those learned firs hand. Now when I am showing somebody how to brew for their first time the normal response is "wow, thats it?" Basically you heat water to a given temp, add grain and wait an hour, then...

how much does it cost... for you?

I know you all have already mentioned all grain, but I recently picked up my grain mill and did some rough math. Bulk 2 row pale $0.66/lb, various other grain prices, hops in bulk, yeast washing and brewing electric, I'm right at under $0.25 a beer for a decent 1.055 batch. $1.50 a 6er' is...

How smooth should a Barley Crusher roll?

yeah, I'll test it most likely this weekend. I'm not too concerned about it being broken, I was just concerned that the roller was a little out of true. I'm sure after a break in period it will be fine, its just a somewhat large purchase and I wanted to make sure it wasnt going to give me...

How smooth should a Barley Crusher roll?

I just bought a barley crusher last night and when I got home I took the wrapping off and played with it a little. It rolls smooth for about 180 degrees, then stiffens up a little for the last half of the revolution. Is this normal? I know I could lube it up, but I'm a little concerned that...

    Cleaning glue from bottles

I know most people here don't like Corona, but the way they dont have glued labels seems like a step above buying empty bottles from the LHBS. Are there any craft brews that use the same label method as Corona? I've wanted to get my hands on some old coke or Dr Pepper bottles for this.

    jamils chocolate hazelnut porter

I just tried it again today, and sorry to Jamil, the flavor did mellow out nicely. I am very happy with the brew now. It does tast like Christmas though, would have been much better if I brewed it about a month earlier when Chirstmas magic was still in the air.

    Electric mash tun

The one I have you can actually see the discoloration where it was probably heated and bent from the factory. Sorry I cant give you a brand name.

    Electric mash tun

I bought mine from Lowes. I dont remember if it is a 4500 or 5500 watt element, and if there are any identifying marks on it they are probably below the epoxy.

Bending an electric water heater heating element???

I have to disagree. I have bent mine, just a little though;) Some must be internally built different than others. And it still works fine at 120v. I dont currently have it set up for 240.

    Electric mash tun

    Heres another.

    Electric mash tun

So as it turns out, these elements are bullet proof. I decided I didnt like not being able to stir it in a cooler so I went ape sh.. on the bending. keep in mind I was not being careful or even using any fancy methods of bending. I didnt even heat it up first. Now that I know how nicely they...

    jamils chocolate hazelnut porter

I just through a batch of this into the keg today, added half the hazelnut and tested it a couple hours later. Its a little hard to tell for sure as it is still a little warm and no carbonation, but the hazelnut seems way too potent. Almost ruin my beer potent. Anybody have a take on this...

    120 or 240 heat stick

I just realised I posted to the wrong thread. Oops.

    120 or 240 heat stick

I guess I can upload photos. It still turns cold water into hot water but I cant guarantee I didnt shorten the lifespan of the element. Right now It is only hooked up to 120v. I'm going to make another bend because it's too big to stir aroung in my cooler, but it does fit in there without...

    Electric mash tun

BTW, I got a full 90deg bend with maybe a 2" radius. Or whatever the radius of my knee is.
