    Wheaty McHopface

Ooof, you're right. I probably overdid it. I was tweaking it with the intention of bringing the pH down a bit more and lost sight of the overall percentages. Though it seems there is some debate on what the max percent acidulated would be, I'll definitely knock it back by 1/2 lb or so. I don't...

    Wheaty McHopface

After a few years hiatus from brewing, quarantine has brought me back to the hobby. I couldn't be happier. I just finished bottling an ESB and I want to knock out something else while I still have momentum. I've been considering making a beer that goes against conventional wisdom and I've read...

    To late for hop growing?

Hi, You can get hop plants, not rhizomes, at Pepiniere Jasmin in Ville St. Laurent. The only beer related hop they have on their website is Nugget (http://www.jardinjasmin.com). I'm sure other nurseries would have as well. You might also want to look at Bristol Hops. They are producers of...

Anyone added Specialty Grains to secondary?

Hi KiltLifter, I know this thread is a bazillion years old, but I am really curious as to the outcome of adding specialty grain "tea" to the secondary. Did you finally try it? What was the result? Thanks a lot. Brian

    Starsan + Campden = Sulphur ???

I used a bit more I guess. Total water treated was around 55 litres to which I added one full tablet. So that's around 14.5 gallons for one whole tablet. Thinking back, I should probably have used only a half, but I don't think there is any harm done. At least I hope not.

    Starsan + Campden = Sulphur ???

Hi, For my brew session yesterday I picked up some Campden tablets to treat the chlorine/chloramine in my water. I also started using StarSan for the first time. Of course, being ultra-paranoid after a small chlorophenol off-flavour in my last beer, I mixed the StarSan with the treated...

    Kettles in Canada

Yeah, seems like a lot, but it is high quality aluminium and about 1/4" thick.

    Kettles in Canada

I'm in Montreal and was able to find a 42 litre aluminium pot at Winners/HomeSense for around $65 CAD. Happy Holidays!!! Brian

    Bottle pressure limits

Hello fellow brewers. I've been using these 500ml bottles almost exclusively. They are readily available here in Quebec as they are used by many of our microbreweries. I also find the size to be very convenient. Until now I've not had the need to carbonate beyond 2.5 volumes. I'm...

    Dirt Cheap DIY Bottle Washer

Hi, I just wanted to share this dirt cheap bottle washer that I rigged up. I built an immersion chiller about a month ago and had a left-over fitting from the washing machine hose. I deliberately left a few inches of hose on the end of the fitting hoping it would come in handy some day. While...

    stuck fermentation?

The yeast I used in the stout was US-05. I fermented for the first 12 days at 66F or so, then I increase the temp to about 70F for the last 3 days after rousing the yeast. The recipe was my first attempt at throwing my own thing together. I should have pitched two packages of yeast. Batch...

    stuck fermentation?

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but I'm in essentially the same situation, and my answer is likely relevant to the OP as well. I know now that I under pitched on an extract American Stout I brewed. OG 1.075, target FG 1.018. 15 days in primary and I've bottomed out at 1.022 (~70% AA). I've...

Idea for all copper heat stick design...

I used the gasket that came with the element on the inside of the 2" cap. I didn't use anything between the nut and the cap. The tricky part was drilling the cap without a step bit or chassis punch. Instead, I marked the hole with a Sharpie, drilled all around with a smallish bit, and punched...

Idea for all copper heat stick design...

Hi, I recently built two heatsticks using copper. I'll post pictures later to give you an idea of how I did it. In order, from the top down, I used a 1 1/4" test cap, a length of 1 1/4" cooper pipe, a 90º elbow, a 1 1/4" to 2" reducer, and a 2" cap. I drilled a 1" hole in the cap for the...

    Quick heatstick question

Thanks for all the comments guys. I guess I really won't know what the outcome will be until I try. I hadn't planned on using the stove while boiling, but after thinking a while on it, I suppose it's a possibility. I'm due for a kitchen reno within the next year though. I'll be sure to have...

    Quick heatstick question

Hi all, I have a quick question about building heatsticks. I have a ceramic top stove that can't handle a pot large enough for full boils. I'm considering building 2 110V heatsticks. My stove has two appliance outlets, each with it's own 15A circuit breaker. Anyone foresee issues running...
