    Is this yeast

hey guys, I had no kombucha starter nearby, so I bought an unflavoured, unpausterized bottle from a local store. The bubbles are there and the fermentation is happening. After 2 weeks there is no sign of a pellicle forming. Fermeting at 20C. Floating (not on the surface) whitish chunks appeared...

Is starter tea just kombucha that has sit in a jar after first fermentation?

Hi, So, I have just learnt that I need to add 10% of starter tea to the freshly brewed tea to kickstart the fermentation. So, I already have a starter from a friend, but how do I make my own starter? I just put some kombucha (that has gone through 1st fermentation) into a jar and leave it like...

Can I use honey instead of sugar (using the same measurements)?

Hi I have been told that 12% of my liquid should be sugar. so, 1L should contain 120 grs of sugar. Can I do the same, but with honey? Would the honey be better or worse to the actual fermentation process? Would I need the same amount (120 grs in 1L)? Thanks

What happens after the primary fermentation?

Hey guys, So, most of the videos on YouTube talk about how we start the primary fermentation and then we need to bottle at the end. However, I would like to know how to proceed right after bottling. I have been given different instruction, but they are mainly for those who wanna favour...

How much head space do we need in primary and then in the bottles?

hey guys, I know there wont be a vigorous fermentation like with beer...but do we need to leave a few inches of headspace in the primary fermentation vessel? If yes, how much? What about the bottles during the secondary fermentation? Thank you.

Do we just use washing-up liquid and then StarSan?

Hey guys, Is it enough just to remove gunk from the equipment using normal washing-up liquid and a soft sponge (one that doesn't scratch), then spray everything with StarSan? I am just trying to make sense of all the different practices and ideas I have seen so far. One could go crazy just...

Would anyone ever brew (BIAB) a small batch (1.5 gallons) of barley wine? Maybe an old foghorn clone?

What are the pros and cons of this idea? Pro: the price of barley wine is kind of high. Con: a mini batch BIAB might not be ideal since the high malt bill might make it complicated. Less wort since the space is needed for the malt bill and efficiency might suffer too (I dont sparge). Any...

How to deal leftover yeast that we use for small BIAB batches?

Hey guys, So, a sachet of Safale US-05 (11.5 grs) is enough for 20-30L of wort. My batches will be around 6-8L. So, what do I do with the rest? Shall I just keep the sachet in the fridge and use it again? Or shall I just use the entire sachet and give the yeast a better chance against other...

Is there a way to propagate yeast at home and that way stop buying the sachets?

Hey guys, The title gives it all away. :) So, can we buy a sachet of yeast and then just reuse that yeast that we have at the end of the fermentation? I assume the biggest issue might be creating the starters and possibly contaminating our wort. I have read that some people use petri-dishes...

Why are there so many different yeast options?

I am not complaining...I am just genuinely curious. My understanding was that it is only lager and ales that one can make (which is the generic truth). Then when I go to a website to shop for yeast, I find at least 10 different types of yeast in the ale and lager categories. How is that...

Does it matter what kind of refractometer we get?

Hey guys, So, it feels like ATC (temperature adjustment) is a basic feature when it comes to refractometers(at least with the ones I have found so far). However, there are tons of different types (depending on what you make or have), but I guess we just have to go for the one that says it is...

What is the ideal min and max L/kg mash ratio for BIAB with infusion mashing (no sparging)?

I have been reading about this topic and have also tried to find an answer in the forum, but there seems to be no answer when it comes to infusion mashing. I am sure a lot of people will say that it is a bit of a random question because I put "ideal" in the title, but I just want to be in the...

Pressure fermentation in the same keg that the beer gets served from.

I am reading the info on this website: Under Pressure:Fermentation in a closed system. How is this even possible? It says this: Pressure fermentation can streamline your process:many homebrewers ferment their beer in the same keg they’ll drink it from. By fermenting in a corny keg, or a...

Do people keg small (2 gallon) batches? How is it done?

hey guys, This is a newbie question. I am thinking of brewing a 2-gallon batch and kegging it after fermentation. How would one start (or learn about) it? I am totally new to kegging, but would like to give it a go. Could I just keep such a small keg in the fridge and hook it up to an...

What do Europeans use to clean/sanitize their equipment?

I brewed a few years ago in Spain. I am planning to go back after this covid madness and brew again. Just BIAB only 1-2 gallons per brewday. I can barely remember what I used to clean/sanitize. I remember that back in the days when I read a lot about brewing, people were using oxi something...

What are the standard items that we need to input in BrewTarget when creating a new equipment profile?

Hey guys, I am trying to create this 6L (1.5gallon) mini BIAB batch in BrewTarget, but I would need to setup the equipment profile first. I'd really appreciate some help in setting it up. My idea is to mash and boil the wort in the same pot. I have no idea what to put where it says "volume"...

What kettle size is recommended in BIAB brewing?

According to a website the ideal size is 50% extra of your final batch size, but minimum 30%. That is of website that doesn't refer to BIAB (I guess it is just the preboil size). So, if I'd like a final batch size of 1.5 gallons...then my mashing size is 3.5 gallons (with a simple low grain...

Can one just brew BIAB and top it up with boiled water?

hey guys, Is there a way to, say, make a 2 gallon BIAB batch and top it up with roughly the same amount of water? I am wondering if the wort can have such a high OG that the water we add would balance it out to an OG that we are aiming for. How do I even calculate it? I would like to brew an...

What recipe calculator can I use instead of Brewtoad?

Hey guys, I am back (after many years) and just learnt that brewtoad shut down (yeah..I know. I am a few years late to the goodbye party :) ). Is there another website, software, app that is extremely similar that I could switch to? Thank you.

Minimalist brewing that won't get one killed in the kitchen

hey guys. I'd like to brew (all-grain), but keep it simple (yet good enough so that my friends would envy my brew). By simple I mean minimalistic so that I wouldn't have to dedicate a lot of room to the equipment/ingredients. I know there are a few blogs out there, but I was wondering if...
