    First fruits

My 2nd year hop plant has ~10 full size hops towards the bottom. The rest of the plant is forming hops but are much smaller or are still little spurs. I'm not worried s about over all yield as there are many spurs all over the plant. Do I harvest this hand full of hops when they're ready? The...

    Beer category/ style

If you brew a beer with oak chips and it had a solid oaky flavor after a few days to a week. What would it technically be classified as? Because it's not technically oak "aged". Planning on submitting it into a home brew competition and need to know how to label it.

    Tangled off shoots

My bines are doing great this year. They're 2nd year. The offshoots are growing like mad. I've noticed in several places there are several off shoots wrapping around eachother an getting entangled. My first assumption is that it's normal but then I became worried about hop yeild/ health. Could...

    Using oak barrel

Thank you for giving personal experience! Here's what I did. I admit I'm hoping it'll turn out OK. I brought tap water up to 200F and put 80g of K-meta (I'm glad there's a short hand for that) and 37g of citric acid, transferred it into the barreI and left it in for a week. It swelled water...

    Using oak barrel

Hello, Thank you for the reply! It seems the best method would have been waiting until the day before I plan to transfer beer into the barrel before filling it with hot water. I used tap water so I used potassium metabisulfate to dechlorinate. I then added 8g potassium metabisulfate and 4g of...

    Using oak barrel

I currently have a 10 gal oak barrel filled with the appropriate about of potassium metabisulfite and citric acid. Im wondering, other than just dumping it out of the barrel, if there is anything else I need to do before putting beer in it. Will the citric acid cause off flavors in my beer? If...

Using Omega Hornindal Kviek yeast for the first time

Hello, I'm going to be brewing a Cascadian (Black) IPA with a gravity around 9%. I've typically used dry yeast, even for beers 8%+ but I want to try Hornindal Kviek liquid yeast. How many packs should I use for 5 gallons? If I could get some tips on how to keep the yeast happy throughout...

    Oak Aged DDH NEIPA

Wanted to follow up with this since I just kegged it. So I'll start with what I did. I have a bubbler so I put it on a triclamped male hose adapter. I put 1oz of oak chips in a hop bag and tied fishing line on it and ran it through the top (out of the male hose adapter). I let it ferment for 10...

    Oak Aged DDH NEIPA

Seeing different recipes and techniques to make "hop bomb" neipas. Ive seen ddh in addition to putting hops in the keg. Putting hops in during high krausen for the biotransformation to have permanent haze. So I figured why not do all but with smaller additions. Instead of doing two 4oz additions...

    Oak Aged DDH NEIPA

I have a conical fermentor that I would open the valve on to remove yeast. I would open the lid to drop a bag of chips in but there should be a cloud of co2 right? At that point it would only have recieved 1 hop addition at high krausen. It would have 3 more hop additions before being served...

    Oak Aged DDH NEIPA

Hmm, interesting I did an Oaked 90 min IPA with different hops but same hop schedule as Dogfish Heads and was rated one of the best beers I've done from a group of painfully honest beer snob friends. Their response wasn't "now this ones alright" it was "this is one I'd prefer over some...

    Oak Aged DDH NEIPA

Thanks for your reply and I would agree since age drastically decreases hop flavor and aroma. My plan was to ferment for a week, hop at high krausen, rack to secondary on oak chips, hop it a few days later, then after a week on the chips, hop it again then keg it with hops in a keg spider. So...

    Oak Aged DDH NEIPA

I've Googled Oak Aged DDH Imperial NEIPA with no results. Before I try it I'd like to know if anyone has tried this before. If so, was it a success or failure?

Yeast fell a few minutes after pitching

I forgot about it being a slow starter, I usually add yeast nutrient and it usually has taken off by the following morning. It now has a colony floating on time. There didn't seem to be a high krasen, but its bubbling every now and then. Thanks for the follow up!

Yeast fell a few minutes after pitching

That was my thought too. I pitched dry yeast on top with out mixing it in. Then I started doing something else and when I looked back most of the yeast was gone and what was left was slowly sinking.

Yeast fell a few minutes after pitching

Hello, I've been brewing for a little over a year and have done around 15 brews (so I'm still a noob). I don't remember ever seeing the yeast fall to the bottom shortly after I pitched it. Ive left it alone for about 6 hours and the beer is clearing. I can see the proteins/ trub/ etc. falling...

How to do a 5 gal batch using 5 gal kettle

Love the feed back.... Funny story. I ended up cancelling my order because I had to back order the thermometer. So I ordered an 8 gal. Bayou classic kettle through Home Depot and what was delivered was the 16 gal 6 piece. I currently can't really use that big of a pot so I returned it and...

How to do a 5 gal batch using 5 gal kettle

Hello, Its been a little since if posted or brewed; Grad school can be very time consuming. I've mainly done 2 gal batches for the past year and want to bump up to 5 gal batches. I'm ready to buy an 8 gal brew kettle but if I can avoid it, that would be great. I currently have a 5 gal pot. 5...
