    Pictures of hop plants

BTW, I tried what you were asking about. I picked the larger cones and left the smaller ones, generally lower on the bine. I'll let you know how it works out. We are getting some unusually warm fall weather here, so I might get a second harvest, so to speak.

    Pictures of hop plants

Wondering if you can identify my hops variety from the photo I'm using as my icon (at left). I "borrowed" a snip from a neighbor of mine who is never home when I am around. Someone told me they look like Centennial. This was their third year. They are in their second year in that photo.

    Hop Dry picture tutorial

I put mine on a window screen set upon a pair of unfolded step ladders in my garage. I hooked up an old dehumidifier and had it blow on them for 3 days. They dried out nicely. I did flip them a few times to promote even drying.

What I did for beer today

I bagged up my hops (see photo at left) and put them in the freezer. I have 5 gallons of nut brown ale in the fermenter. I'm thinking about using my hops to dry hop the ale when I rack it to the secondary in about a week. This will be my first experience with dry-hopping and with my home grown...

What I did for beer today

I noticed the cover on the top of your airlock. I have been using the S-type airlocks (what I had) but was recently gifted three of the type you are using. Should I be using the covers that came with mine? If so, why?

    First mead

I put half (4 0z.) of the Fermaid K in when I pitched the yeast, 2 oz. more on Day 2 and the final 2 oz. on Day 4. It seems to be working as I am seeing active fermentation, i.e. lots of bubbling in the fermentation lock. SG went from off the scale to 1.041. I'm not going to check that again for...

    Hops ablaze?

I can't believe "smoked" is a good condition for hops. Thanks for the pics! Hope it all ends soon.

    Hops ablaze?

Ooooh, a fermentation specialist! I'm trying to cultivate some yeast. Would you answer some questions I have?

    Hops ablaze?

Glad to hear the hops survived! Believe it or not, we're experiencing some haze here in Minnesota from the wildfires. Can't imagine what it must be like for you. Not much you can do about it, I guess, so relax and have a homebrew. Cheers!

    First mead

What is the purpose of the campden tablets? I have some, but because I used bottled water I didn't think I would need those. Am I right? Also, I am adding Fermaid K, just to set your mind at ease. lol

Hello! New to all of this.

Hi Curt! I haven't made that jump yet, but it is my next planned step. I'm making a little foray into meadmaking. My first batch is fermenting now (Day 4). Anyway, welcome to HBT and keep us posted on your progress. Maybe I can learn a little something.

    HowZit everybody !

I still haven't met the brewer/grower, but I believe they are either Cascade or Centennial, leaning toward the latter.

    HowZit everybody !

I have a nearby neighbor who is a brewer at one of our small breweries and he's had these hops growing on the side of his yard for many years. I walk by them often, but never see him around. Three years ago, I was having a little campfire in my backyard (drinking some homebrew) and decided to...
