    2nd in local GABF Pro-Am Brew-Off

Sooo close... My IPA came in a very close second place in the Kentucky Ale (Lexington Brewing Company) 2010 GABF Pro-Am Brew-Off. Got some really nice comments on the judges' sheets, though. Average score 44/50. "Classic example of the style." "Flawless." Next year, I plan to win. ;)...

    Damn creepy crawlies

On weekends, when I'm not brewing I'm likely to be hiking. Last weekend (the day after I brewed), I did a five-mile hike with my dog. I didn't know it until I got home, but a Lone Star tick bit me. When I got home I saw him on my back but couldn't get to him with tweezers well enough to...

    Stone 2009 Old Guardian clone

Brewed this Saturday... took a bunch of pics, thought I'd post them: 23 1/2 pounds of grain... Very full 10 gallon mash tun The hops plants are in the background looking on nervously...

    Kicking it up a notch

While enjoying a couple nice locally-brewed APAs, I just witnessed a woman putting Tabasco sauce in a bottle of Miller Lite. I was puzzled at first, but then I thought, I guess it can only improve it. There was a lot of fine craft brew available, though.

Side of the road equipment score

I get jealous of the Craigslist Score threads from time to time, so now it's my turn! On the way home from work yesterday, I spotted a grill on the side of the road with a "Free!" sign on it. What caught my eye was that there was a propane tank still attached. I felt weird about stopping and...

Amarillo Imperial IPA in the fermenter

Undershot my intended SG by 7 points, but it's still 1.093. :ban: Hydro sample tasted awesome. Expecting good things! 19 lbs 2-row 14 oz crystal 40 1.3 lbs corn sugar ...and a little over 10 oz of Amarillo I think this is the first time I hit pitching my yeast starter at exactly the right...

    Carbonation curve

Has anyone seen a graph of the average amount of carbonation that occurs vs. time after capping bottles? The reason I ask is that I've once again managed to way overcarb some beer, and I'm trying to decide when I should pop them open and recap them, in order to release the excess pressure but...

Brewed Oskar Blues Gordon Clone today

I don't have a webcam, so no webcast, but I figured I'd post a photo log. The recipe is Can You Brew It's clone recipe, with a few adjustments due to different AA%, etc.: 16.80 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 79.97 % 1.68 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 8.00 %...

How many trick or treaters have you had?

How's your trick or treater count going? It's 8:22PM here and I've had exactly three trick or treaters.

    Pretty fermentation

Most fermentation is ugly. This one looked cool enough that I took a pic: :)

    Pubs in Cincinnati

I'll be in Cincinnati for a few days in a couple of weeks and should have some time to grab a pint or two at least once or twice. Any suggestions? More specifically, I'll be in Sharonville. I've been to the Cock & Bull in Covington several times, so I'll probably head there again if I don't...

    Attention Louisville people!

Greg Koch (Stone Brewing) will be at Flanagan's Saturday evening. Come out and say hello...I'll be there. I'll wear my black and tan (ha!) New Albanian Brewing Co. shirt so you can find me. I might try to get him to sample my IPA. :)

    Beer in Vegas

Got back from a four day Las Vegas trip recently... didn't get a chance to visit the local microbreweries, but I thought I'd give a brief report on the state of beer in the big strip casino/hotels: We stayed at New York New York. They have a cool (if touristy...of course) "Irish pub" called...

    Reducing attenuation

I have an all-grain version of All-Amarillo IPA that I just kegged. I brewed the extract version (as listed in the recipe section) previously, and the extract version had a noticeable bit more residual sweetness than the all-grain version does. The all-grain version is good, but it needs to be...

    Did something dumb

I just accidentally carbed 12 bottles (144 oz.) of my IPA with 37 grams of corn sugar. That'll be about 3.0 volumes. Oops. (I was reading the DME amount in BeerSmith rather than the corn sugar amount...)

First competition -- Best of Show!

I'm pretty happy. I just got first in IPAs and Best of Show (of 299 entries) at the Kentucky State Fair. First competition I've entered. So now, TheJadedDog, you can proudly add "Best of Show" to your most excellent All-Amarillo IPA recipe! :rockin:

Does anyone recognize this APA recipe?

I ordered a pale ale recipe from Brewmasters Warehouse a few weeks ago... getting ready to brew it, now I've completely forgotten where I got the recipe and don't have a copy of it. Anyone recognize this? (I think I was planning on using my home-grown cascades for flavor and aroma and...

    American Wheat/Rye...poor mouthfeel

My American Wheat/Rye is finally carbed properly (kegged), so I just pulled a pint to sample it. It's like an American Wheat/Rye milkshake. Okay, well it's not that thick. But that's the overriding property of the beer. The mouthfeel is thick. Almost like milk. It tastes pretty good...

Just picked the first batch of Chinook

First year Chinook... I picked about a third of them (2 oz wet). So I guess I'll end up with maybe 1.5 oz dried once they're all picked. Wasn't expecting much of anything first year, but this is a usable amount. Not bad for one first year plant, I think. :rockin: Color's a bit washed...

    American Wheat/Rye weirdness

I brewed my first American Wheat/Rye and just kegged it last night. I used a starter made with a fresh pack of Wyeast 1010 American Wheat. I've never used this yeast before -- the beer smells weird. Almost skunky. I used fresh pellet hops when I brewed it, and the beer wasn't subjected...
