    Wyeast didn't inflate! (schwarzbier)

Today I brewed a schwarzbier, OG 1.048. I bought two packets of yeast because I haven't gotten to making starters. It's currently in the fridge cooling down to 45F The back of the Wyeast package says that one is good for a 1.060 beer but in the brew strong podcasts they seem to say 1 package...

Ok to Keg 2.5g in a 5g Corny?

Hey, I have 2.5 gallons of cider I'd like to keg up. Anything I need to keep in mind or do different with so much more headspace? Should the pressure be changed? Typically my process is to set at 10 psi and wait for a week. With more headspace does the time to carb change? Thanks!

    How Long to dry hop?

I dry hopped a pale ale last night with 1.5 oz of Glacier. I also had a keg open up last night! Do I need to wait a week to rack over to the keg or would 24 hours be enough time before racking out of secondary? I guess I'm unsure if the hops dissolving is what I'm looking for to get the...

Keg Leaking through the gas release valve

Hi, When I turn the gas on to my keg I get bubbles coming out of my gas release valve on the top of the keg lid. I unscrewed the valve and put it back in and I even went a exchanged for another used lid. I replaced the gasket and it is still leaking there. What else can i do? What am I...

    pH meter storage

I have the Hanna Checker 1 pH meter. I didn't have any storage solution to drop into the cap of the probe so I stored it 4.01 solution. I turned it on after not using it for a week and it was reading 4.78! I have little experience with pH so what I'm wondering, is the prode already wrong...

    Nottingham Question

I'm using Nottingham for the first time. The Original Gravity is 1.060 Due to the size of the fridge I'm currently using I had to use a 5 gallon glass carboy (which must really be 5.5 gallons?) So there is some headspace but it is full up to the point that the carboy starts to curve up...

    Faucet to Hose Adapter

So I had this bright idea to use a garden hose in the kitchen to fill carboys and buckets for sanitation. I bought a 15 foot hose and it was all working great. I just moved into a new home and I did a test boil (80 min for 5 gallons) and wanted to find out how long it would take to chill. I...

Question about Ball Valves on Boil Kettles

I'm considering upgrading my boil kettle to one with a thermometer and ball valve. I have always racked out of my boil kettle and into a carboy. What I'm wondering is with all the trub left in the boil kettle how well does it work to drain from a ball valve? Would I want to use a Bazooka...

Technique for determining pre boil gravity with a split boil...?

I am boiling on a stove top so I have been splitting my wort into two 5 gallon kettles. As I am collecting my wort I drain into a measuring cup then dump into boil kettles. So usually one kettle has all the mash water and part of the first sparge then the second has the remaining sprage...

I have a vial of WLP380 Hefeweizen IV Ale yeast I need to use up. Thing is I don't really want to brew a Hefeweizen. Any idea's on how to creatively use this yeast? I wonder how it would taste in a pale / bitter...?

    So much trub!

I brewed a 2.5 gallon Farmhouse ale tonight with this grain and hop bill: 4.5 lbs Belgian Pils .5 German Munich .5 Belgian Aromatic .5 Light Belgian Candi Sugar added in the last 20 minutes of the boil .5 oz EKGs at 60min .25 oz @ 15 min .25 @ 1 min As the wort was cooling with an immersion...

    BJCP Question

Tonight I finished off my Gose. It finished at 1.020 after six weeks (started at 1.053). It has a nice sourness to it with lots of Malt character. Over time I would assume the brett will continue to develop but there is a homebrew comp coming up (SPHBC). If I submitted it would be in the next...

Can you only blend it or can you make it?

So I'm a big fan of a a poor mans black velvet. Last night I was bottling my first apfelwein. I was drinking stout and mixed my deadspace apfelwein with the stout and it was tasty. I was drinking 750's with a grolsh style topper. I didn't finish it and left it for the next night. Tonight I was...

    How to Perdict Gravity?

For my first all grain beer I will be brewing an English Ordinary Bitter. I am using the recipe from John Palmer which includes British Invert Sugar. Since this is my first all grain I computed my grain bill using 65% eff. My concern is if things go better than that. I have been reading tons...

    Water Report Questions - mg/LCaCO3

I was able to get a copy of a very detailed (10 pages!) water report of the spring water I have been using. A few things: No where can I find a bicarbonate level. Should I be looking for something else? Under total hardness it is listed as: 570 mg/LCaCO3. In Charlie Papazians book...

Question about Wheat Extract in Calculators

I'm currently using BeerAlchemy. When selecting extract they have a selection for Bavarion Wheat Dry Extract. I'm guessing this would correspond to 100% wheat extract even tho it is rarely sold that way? Thanks Also: Is there anyway to predict wort volume after boil?

    Questions on first Partial Mash

I want to steep some flaked oats in my next batch. From what I understand they need to be steeped with munich to convert the starch to sugar. I was planning on a half pound of each. Is that ratio ok? Or do I need more munich than flaked oats? I am planning on mashing them in muslin bag. Add...
