    First brew day

One extra note on the glass carboys; just dropping a full one will cause it to explode. A quick search on this site or google will reveal the potentially gruesome results. I dropped a glass one on my first brew day many moons ago and sliced my leg open to the bone with a flying chunk of glass...

    Increasing beer clarity

Irish moss or Whirlfloc are added to the boil, and you can't go wrong with them. As I understand it, they help separate the proteins post-boil. Gelatin is a must in my brewery, I think it makes a huge difference in clarity. I add it during my cold crash, but you can add it after. I'll chill the...

    How do YOU sparge?

I no-sparge, large cooler with a SS braided hose. Following the methods of The Brulosopher and Don Osborne: It takes a bit more grain (approx 1.2x), for which I made a spreadsheet calculator based on math from Palmer's How To Brew; I just dump in whatever recipe I'm using and my desired mash...

Brew Shop - An Android Homebrew App

Great app, I've been using it for a couple years. I took a break from brewing and re-opened the app recently only to find all of my recipes gone! Any idea what might have happened? Might an update have erased them all. Any backup folder/directory where they're stored? Thanks!

    Too Much Time in Fermenter?

Yep, you're good to go. I usually do 4-6 weeks in primary for most ales, longer for certain types like porter, stout, etc.. An IPA won't go bad if left in there that long, they're just usually pulled of the yeast after 10-21 days.

    Nutrient in starter?

Yes. How much? A fairly good sized pinch (1/2tsp sounds about right) for a 2l starter on a stirplate gets my wlp001 blowing foam out the top by end of day 2. Although it technically is science, it doesn't need to be scientific. Just tap some nutrient in there. The yeasts will love you.

    Age and daily beer consumption.....

41 trips around the sun for me. Usually have 3-5 12oz glasses per day. No hard stuff at all. Every couple of weeks I take a day or two off. Cheers!

Short dry hop the new norm?

Here's a couple of interesting reads on the short hopping topic. Incidentally, after reading these articles and others, I have moved to the 5 days max (usually 3), with agitation every couple days, with very satisfying results. A scholarly read, see specifically section 2.3.3...

Limit of 200 gallons of home brew.....

    Chlorophenols from RO water?

If the plastic flavor is indeed from chloramines, Campden should help. Our water down here in Tan Diego has 'em, and I definitely noticed a positive difference after using 1/2 a tablet in 10 gallons of water. I just mashed it up and tossed it in as the water was heating.

    use glass beer bottles

Amber bottles saved from old 6 packs I've purchased have always worked well. I use bottles from one brewery, that way they all match; makes bottling and storage much easier. You'll find some brand's labels will come off easier than others. Just soak the bottles in Oxyclean and water and the...

    Cold crashing and oxidation

I haven't seen this mentioned, so I thought I'd share my technique. I'm not claiming it's better or worse, but it seems to work for me. When I begin my cold crash, I remove the airlock entirely, covering the top of the carboy (still with the stopper) with some sanitized aluminum foil. I squeeze...

    CO2 issues when kegging

Yooper likely has your answer. I had exactly the same issue as well, including the flat taste with 5 foot lines at 40 deg and 14 psi. Once I switched to 15 foot lines and force carbing, the issue was resolved, including the flat taste. I think the long lines slow down the delivery and calm down...

    Find beetle in wort

Nope. Just repeat the following phrase 3 times: Beetle juice, Beetle juice, Beetle juice! Seriously though, it'll be fine. Get your yeast going and they'll destroy anything the beetle brought to the party. If he brought anything at all. Sounds like it wasn't a BYOB party anyway. :D
