What does good yeast smell like?

I'm in the process of trying to revive a package of expired WYeast 1450 and have my first mini starter going. It's about 9 months since it was packaged and just wondering what to look for as far as the smell. It's mildy sour but not bad at all when I smell into the Erlenmeyer flask. It's been on...

    Expired, Swollen Wyeast 1450

I'm brewing a pumpkin ale and am using WY1450. I went to my LHBS and found one pack manufactured on December 8th of 2016. The bag had also been "popped" so it was swelled. They gave it to me for free. Think it'll work? I'll obviously use a starter but just wondering. My og will be ~1.065

    Clarifying with Gelatin question...

I've never noticed any difference in mine and use gelatin for all my beers, except my hefeweizens.

How many gallons of homebrew in 2017?

    8090.5 + 5 gallon hefeweizen + 5 gallon pale ale + 5 gallon American strong ale + 5 gallon pale ale + 5 gallon pumpkin ale + 5 gallon hefeweizen = 8120.5

    Super fast Hefe Fermentation

Sounds about normal for me. I use Wyeast 3638 and my final gravity is usually reached in a matter of days. But I ferment warm at 70f

    Keg eruption!

It was at 1.012 for 3 days. I used wlp 007 and it had sat in primary for just about a month. I transferred before adding dry hops. Like I said, I had only put it on gas for a min or two and purged as much out as I could. When I pulled the prv before removing the hops, a small hiss was all i...

    Best hop combination with Cascade?

Perle as bittering with Cascade as flavor, aroma and dry hop

    Keg eruption!

Oh okay, and yes and no to your question. I was avoiding o2 to limit oxidation but also didn't want any co2 in the beer as I wasn't quite ready to carb it. I had put it in the keg as a "secondary fermentation" so I had planned on letting sit for a week or two before I started carbing. Oh well...

    Keg eruption!

Interesting. Thanks for the info. So even tho the keg had only been on gas for a few mins and it was burped, that's still enough to carb the beer? I had always thought carbonation required time, temp and psi. Everything I had done was to minimize the amount of dissolved co2.

    Keg eruption!

Is there a chance there may have been more co2 than I thought in the keg? And it had already been carbed? I only used 10 psi for maybe a few minutes and burped it multiple times. Also, the reason I had pulled the hops out is because I used a bag to drop them in and was going to pull them out...

    Keg eruption!

There was some co2 in the keg as I had purged the O2 from the keg. But not much.

    Keg eruption!

Woah not sure what just happened. Had my arrogant bastard clone in the keg and had been dry hopped with 2oz of Chinook. I had very little headspace in the keg and there was some minor foaming when I put the hops in. Anyway, I had gone to remove the hops today. Relaeaes the pressure in the keg...

    HomeBrewSupply.com sold.

I have a huge extra freezer so luckily storage isn't much of an issue here. But yeah, I have hops for days right now.

    HomeBrewSupply.com sold.

I bought 7lbs of hops for just under $85! All individually sealed in 1oz packages. I ordered a week or two ago (right when the 60% off started) and my ordered shipped next day. Guess I got lucky! Best of luck with your order being fulfilled

    Need Your Advice

Thanks for the replies. I understand, there's more to this than I could explain in a few paragraphs. Maybe my mind has been clouded because my groomsman have basically told me "hey this is 100% your deal. The other parts of the wedding are 100% hers." Note: they are all married men. I guess...

Oh and if it helps the discussion, the brother is part of the wedding party. The three other guys going are also groomsmen.

    Need Your Advice

Good evening gents! So I'm getting married in October. I've been with my fiance for 4 years and we've definitely had our ups and downs over the years. She SUPER close to her family, especially her brother who she's views as a 2nd father. So my bachelor party is being planned right now...

    PWM Stir Plate

Good catch. He's using a different fan. Hmm may need to rethink this project. I thought I could use a simple pc fan but looks like he used a PWM fan. They sell for about 10 bucks. I may or may not keep trying with this project. I have an old stir plate was just hoping to upgrade with this one...

    PWM Stir Plate

Hmmm. Tried with no magnets and same thing. Seemed simple enough when I started this project. The only thing I see different between my setup and the one I'm trying to duplicate is that he used a 12v 3a power supply. Any other idea what might cause this? I can't use it at 100 because the...

    PWM Stir Plate

Thanks for the explanation. So I tried with my 12v power supply and same issue. Either 100 or nothing. With the 12v there was some minor "twitching " of the fan at about 55 but nothing happened besides that. Any idea what's going on here? Maybe a stronger power supply more more amps?
