    Super Cloudy Wort

Simple solution: put it in a bucket instead of a carboy. It may be cloudy, but you wont know it. Also, have you done gravity checks on it? Is it still not fermenting, or are you going by airlock activity? While a beer is fermenting, it will be VERY cloudy. When it is done, it will...

About to dump 15gal of maple ale. Help!

This is probably the best response to dumping a beer I have ever read: you had a beer that took up room in a keg for a year, now you get to drink a beer you think "isnt half bad". Dump them nasty beers, people! Brew better, drink better then next time.

Fav hop combos for a pale ale?

I have over a pound of columbus that I have always been nervous to use because a buddy is particularly sensitive to it and scared me off of using it. Unfortunately, I don't have the AA% on this, but I need to start using it as a late addition and dry hopping. Maybe next batch...

Fav hop combos for a pale ale?

Went with Amarillo/Simcoe. Tasted pretty solid going into the fermenter.

Fav hop combos for a pale ale?

Brewing a recipe that started as a mirror pond clone. Original was all cascade, but I have been trying a few different things with it the last few times. Right now, I have bulk amarillo in the freezer, and some old columbus...but any hop is on the table. I personally like the citrus and piney...

    Review of 30 dry hops

Never saw this thread until now. I am surprised that people arent shouting from the rooftops in defense of Chinook! Love this hop, I added 2 oz of Chinook to an all cascade during the boil pale ale, and it has a perfect balance of pine to it....not overpowering in any way....definitely no cat...

Can you Brew It recipe for Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale

Last time I brewed this, I did my first 10 gallon batch and did half regular, then the other half 2oz cascade and 2 oz chinook. The chinook was a clear stand out (I know this is no longer a clone, but it was a damn good beer). This time up, completely off the reservation, going to a C45 and...

    Another Question about BIAB

There is a lot of good information here that will be completely lost on you until you ACTUALLY brew your first BIAB. My recommendation would be to just brew to the recipe you want and see what happens. Here is the easy peasy first timer BIAB way to go about it: -pick a recipe that you can...

BIAB + Cooler = finally made it!

Looks like there are a few people taking this approach (a BIAB in a cooler)...I guess with smaller batch sizes? Who knows. I myself have kept the mashing and boiling side at least pretty simple with a keggle and full volume, but I guess if you arent mashing with close to 9 gallons, temperature...

Advice with WLP002 - activity stopped after 36 hours

As stated, 002 is a fast worker. You should take gravity readings to be sure, but I usually brew on one weekend and keg the next with 002. 7 days for a normal gravity beer and this yeast is plenty (definitely no secondary needed). Looking back, your gravity is a touch higher than my normal...

BIAB + Cooler = finally made it!

A couple things to consider: -Maybe your problem from the get go on your previous batches is the crappy crush you are getting from the LHBS mill. -were you insulating your kettle during mash? Myself, I dont worry if my mash temp drops 2-3 degrees during the mash, as I feel that the bulk...

    Minimalist Homebrewing

    Minimalist Homebrewing

While I guess I cant be considered "minimalist" since I keg AND have a dedicated ferment chamber, I do believe in keeping processes and recipes simple. I think the two largest mistakes home brewers make on the way to making bad beer are no fermentation temp control, and over-complicating...

Why does all Samuel Adams Beer Taste Bad?

My hypothesis on SA is not specific to them, but to any bottled beer. The beer you poured from a bottle at your house is absolutely NOT the same beer that left the brewery. Sam Adams is going to really suffer from this, since they are sold everywhere...from bottle shops to convenience stores...

    english ipa critiques

My pale ale recipe uses a pound of C77 (medium british crystal) and nobody has ever called it cloying. If I were to make an English IPA, I would do the same thing. Bitter recipes use 8 oz light crystal, 4 oz dark crystal....same thing. I was looking up cara red profiles yesterday after...
