Do you like where you live?

I live just outside of Pittsburgh and have to admit I really enjoy it. It is a pretty diverse area - four distinct seasons, tons of outdoor stuff to do, good cultural offerings downtown, cheaper housing, good job market depending on what you do, everything is a fairly short drive, good sports...

Worst batch of beer you ever brewed?

Worst ever was a chocolate pomegranate hefeweisen I made as an experiment about a year ago. I actually did 4 one gallon batches with differences in each. Ends up they all turned out the same - crappy.

    Spruce mead

Ok so I've read about using spruce tips as an addition for beer, and thought a spruce mead could be good as well. Anybody ever made any? What were your thoughts? Any recipe suggestions? Thanks ~ CIB

    Yeast suggestions

What do you guys think of the White Labs 775 English Cider yeast? My LHBS recommended it to me, and its what I ended up using for this batch. I put the batch together last night and the fermentation was going strong by this morning, so it seems like it is at least doing the job well. I've...

    Yeast suggestions

Hi all, So I want to brew a cyser that retains a fair amount of the apple flavor. I've heard that certain yeasts can help with keeping the apple flavor stronger, while others tend to eliminate it. I am not overly concerned about dry vs. sweet as I can always just backsweeten later on. I've...

Help! I need a name for the small-batch kits I make. Best suggestion gets a free kit!

"The R&D Kit" "Brewtester" "One Gallon Wonder" "Master Brewing Kit" or "Master Brewing Case" "Alchemist's Lab" "Envy of Your Friends" "Reclamation Brewing" The real question is when can we order them and how much will they be? Very cool idea!

In need of a third spice.....

Haha I was wondering how long it would take for a Spice Girl to make it into this thread. Anyways, so all of these ideas have gotten me thinking that its about time to bust out the 1 gallon jugs and do some experimenting. I already have a 5 gallon batch going with the cinnamon. So, what spice...

In need of a third spice.....

Thanks for the cinnamon idea - thats what i ended up going with. I'm also thinking about doing a couple of one gallon batches and experimenting with combinations of some of the other spices (esp. the nutmeg and clove). Thanks again!

    How bad?

A couple of suggestions. 1 - think about getting a couple of one gallon carboys to use as your secondary. That would take care of that excess headspace. 2 - Another option would be to use marbles to help fill up the extra space.
