    Canadian Roll Call!!

14" of good soil ought to be plenty. There are people growing them in rubbermaid bins! google "sub irrigated hops" ...people with small yards, even apartment balconies are growing them. ...I guess if that works, you could bring them in the garage for the winter. although...we had a cold winter...

    Canadian Roll Call!!

[@ Ole Smoky] From Alan Moen, Realbeer: (Hops Need) fertile, well-drained soil (with lots of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphates) and plenty of sunlight - around 120 frost-free days to allow for full flower production. ** The site of my hops is where the previous owners had composters...which...

    Canadian Roll Call!!

Sweet Bejezus I forgot the yeast!

I've used yeast 6 months past its expiration and its been fine. provided the yeast was stored properly you should be OK. it just means there's less viable cells than if it was to expire, say, two years from now. how much is hard to say...20% less, 50% less, I dont know the degradation rate, and...

    Canadian Roll Call!!

I planted Cascade here in Ajax late last June. I got a few hops from them last year, enough for one batch, but not much, as its the first year. They just came back up about 10 days ago...and man are they growing ! over a foot already, and they're really thick and hardy shoots, not at all like...

    Canadian Roll Call!!

@ CanadianBrew - Checkout WineKitz too. I went there when I lived in Calgary, as the name suggests it's more wine oriented, but they have basic beer kits too, and with a little extra hops and better yeast, they make good beer.

thanks for the feedback. meh, after sleeping on it, I think I'll cut my losses with this one, dump it and be done with it.

Drink it or dump it ?

I just tried drinking another sample it has a slight after taste, hard to explain exactly what it tastes like, its kinda sorta like rubber. its faint, but it's there.

Drink it or dump it ?

Attached is a picture of beer that I brewed back on 8/24/2014. It appears to be infected. it tastes...well, not bad (not bad as in nothing tastes likes it's going bad), but doesn't taste great either, it seems to be devoid of any hop flavor. This beer seemed to be cursed from the start. I...

    Stc-1000+

My Arduino card showed. I've had my STC1000+ running for a day now. I had a second STC1000 that I upgraded, and just swapped it out with the older one that I was using. I'll update that one at a later date. so the STC1000+ went in mid-fermentation. I setup a profile, and then stepped ahead...

I ordered an STC1000 back in Jan 2013 from these guys, and it's a 1.0 I just received another one from the same (Lerway) yesterday, and its also a 1.0 could be just lucky. waiting for my arduino to show up now, and I'm gonna give this a shot.

Multiple Jacketed Conicals with Heat & Cool

Why have a conical ? I have mine to make beer easily. its hidden in an ugly home made cabinet with a AC unit hanging off the side. ugly as sin, but does the job. Some may have them to look nice, but not me. If it's a brewpub or u-brew place, then I can appreciate the need for it to look nice...

Got this in the mail today!

This is the book that gave me the confidence and basic knowledge for me to take my first leap into homebrewing. I think it's excellent. checkout the authors website too. This probably goes against the majority, but, I read another, older, well known/popular book about a year before I read the...

Do a lot of people just pitch from yeast slurry?

That's exactly what I do - Remove from fridge when I start brewing, by the time I'm ready to pitch its more or less at room temperature, at which point I just pitch the slurry, so far it's worked fine for me every time.

    Post your infection

something growing on some harvested yeast that's been in my fridge for a few weeks, (actually on top of the inch or so of beer that's above the settled yeast)I was about to use this yeast for a new batch, I pop of the lid and....uhmm yeah, I decided to go with fresh yeast instead. The yeast...

How long are co2 tanks supposed to last?

I naturally carbonate my kegs, and my last 5lb tank lasted for 21 kegs; back when I first set it up I did what masonsjax did - tested the co2 cylinder without the kegs first, when I was happy it held pressure for a few days, I knew the regulator and hoses/connects were good, then I connected...

Show us your DIY stir plate!

Looks like aluminum blades...If the blades get in the way, you could snip them off with some avaiation scissors, or maybe just flatten them out. Need to be careful that you dont throw the balance off too much though.

Show us your DIY stir plate!

here's my cheap stirplate: parts list: fan from a cpu cooler from an old scrap early 2000s PC (I picked it up off the curb) magnets from the dead harddrive from the same PC frozen food container as a housing (I forget the brand - was one of those frozen pasta dinners, I sometimes take them to...

    Nottingham....bananas

Kit & Kilo brewer here, though I tend to modify the kits with DME & better yeasts, I usually get decent results...but this one, not so much. 45L batches, about 12 US gal. I've brewed with Nottingham before, pitched & fermented at around 63 with good results. In August I brewed a blond, one...
