    2010-2011 Fantasy Hockey. Who's in?

OK, gang. There's a long-running FFB league here on HBT. We've had a great season for fantasy baseball. How about some Fantasy Hockey? Come on, you know you want to. I've done a couple of fantasy hockey teams before, but first-timers are more than welcome. I'd hope for this to be an...

    Temporarily a Bachelor

So, SWMBO and the kiddo are off for a couple days to have a "girl's trip" prior to the kiddo starting back to school. That means two nights at home with nothing to do and nobody there with me. I can hardly wait. Tonight, i will brew a batch of beer I've been considering for a while...

I don't need no stinking "I don't need no stinking beer gun" gun!

I just got this e-mail from my Dad: A quick phone call, and I learn that dad just gifted me a 2-1/2 gallon corny keg with ball locks, a bike inflator injector, and a bag full of fittings. It would cost $200+ to add this stuff new to my kegging rig. Transporting beer for the 4th of July just...

QD's on gas lines, or "Why didn't I do this Sooner"?

Since I had to chase down a leak in my gas system today (lost a full 5 lb of gas, dagnabit!), I decided to take the time to add a QD in the line from my reg. to the manifold, and QD's between both manifold ports and the kegs. Wow! Why didn't I do this sooner? It's going to be a LOT easier...

Post your 2009 Holiday Travel Horror Stories Here!

Since most of the east coast seems to be snowed in, I figure all us holiday travelers will need a landing place for our travel tales. All my remaining travel before the holiday will be in the Rockies, West Coast, and Alaska, so the weather looks pretty good for now. Since Thanksgiving, I've...

    Source for Oak Carboy peg?

Hey gang. I'm fixing to brew with Velotech on 10-10, and I'm cooking up a Flanders red for my own personal 10-10-10 beer. I have everything I need, including a packet of Wyeast's Roselare blend, which I was lucky enough to uncover at the LHBS. All is well, except I haven't located an oak...

    Today's Craigslist Find

Yes, I know this is DR&MM. It's the perfect location for this gem from Craigslist. I rehosted it, because I want it to live on after CL deletes the ad. I can't decide if it's awesome in a good way, a bad way, or both. So, who's going to get it for their bar? Revvy?

Favorite beers from the 2009 GABF?

Well, now that the GABF for this year is finished, I'm curious what beers everybody else had that they thought were outstanding or exceptional. The winners list is available here. Going back to my notes on my crackberry, I was really impressed with the following beers: Great Divide's...

    Hibiscus Belgian Blonde Ale

I wanted to make something with nice wit/belgian character, but different. As it turns out, Lemon Zinger tea has a fair bit of hibiscus in it, along with the lemon and tea. So here it is: BeerSmith Recipe Printout - http://www.beersmith.com Recipe: Belgian Redhead Brewer: Joe S Asst...

    Woo, that stinks!

Yesterday, I brewed up a batch of my sour mash dry stout. Instead of doing a separate sour mash this time, I pulled out a gallon of wort, inoculated it with a handful of crushed grain, and left it in the garage at 85-95 degrees for 24 hours. Here's what it looked like earlier:* I just...

    Another boogeyman: Autolysis.

On January 4 of this year, my next door neighbor and I brewed up an 11 gallon IPA. I took half, fermented it as usual, oaked it, kegged it, drank it, and enjoyed it a lot. Today, I was brewing, and the same neighbor stopped by. "Hey," he said. "I've still got that fermenter full of beer in my...

Your laptop, Tell me about it

With my ancient HP Pavilion DV4000 laptop from work rapidly failing, I'm soon to be in the market for another. Not having kept up on things, I'm unsure about what to look for in a new one. So, anybody want to share their recent experiences? Here are my details: No mac, no linux. Don;t...

Tulsa to Dallas: Anything to see?

Hey HBT'ers. I'll be in Tulsa Monday night, 6/22/09, working on Tuesday, and then driving to Dallas. Anything to see or do, or anybody to meet up with, especially in Tulsa on Monday night? Anything interesting in Dallas near DFW?

    Finally located some Malta Goya.

I've been curious about, and wanting to experiment with, using Malta Goya in yeast starters, in place of mixing my own with malt extract. I spent an hour today driving to the "Hispanic Grocery" in the area, Avanza Supermarket - Hispanic Grocery Products No dice. Plenty of Goya products, but no...

Test your gut feel: Reculturing 1+ year old WLP400 slant. Will it live?

I was rooting around in my beer fridge and found a slant of WLP400 that's been in there around a year. Since I'm planning a belgian blonde for the weekend, I figured I'd play Dr. Frankenstein, and try to raise this sucker from the dead. 100 ml of water and 10g of DME later, it's whirling away...

Aging on hardwoods other than oak?

Oak and beech get a lot of use in brewing for aging beer. I was just curious if anybody's played around with aging on different woods. It would seem that hickory, pecan, or apple might provide some different flavors. Mesquite's right out, though. Any feedback?
