    Monumental blow-off tube suck-back

I just put a 1 gal batch of light German style beer into cold-crash on friday. I had it hooked up in a growler, with a bung, blow off tube to a beer bottle with about 250ml of water + a teaspoon of a powdered, oxygen based sanitiser we use here in the UK. As you do. I usually cold crash with 3...

The folley of a plastic element shroud

So 4 brews down the line using elements and they are now rendered unusable. The elements are screwed into the wall of my kettle with plastic...collars? Shroud? See pic. I am unsure of their proper name, and this has really hindered me from finding replacements online. It seems they have...

Brass fittings - a big no no?

Reaching the end of assembling a ball valve outfeed for my fermentor. The tank coupler fitting I believe to be made from brass. How confident can I be that modern brass fittings are lead-free?

    Up and Down cold crashing

Some of you may well know England has hit (finally) its summer season, so temps are getting reasonably hot in the day time. In my garage, my ferm is sitting at a nice cold crash temp at night, but in the day time...well, that's another story. So I figured, would it be appropriate method to...

Thames Valley - Hot ferm side effects?

First time with this yeast. Pitched a nice starter of 1.5L. Fermentation took off in 3 1/2 hours, and by the following day ferm. temps were up to 75-78. I was not pleased. I chilled it to 73 on brewday - plus it was the hottest day in England with terribly muggy humidity. Couldn't get it...

Cocoa Powder - TO BOIL OR NOT TO BOIL

It's the night before brewday. All my browsing in the HBT archives came out with a unanimous YES to adding cocoa powder to the last 10 mins of the boil for a choco-porter. THEN I stumbled across a thread, stating those with good choc flavour from this method after some aging were simply...

    Mr malty's surprising starter prediction

Threw in some figures in Mr Malty's yeast starter app. I'm going to be brewing up a 1.067/ 6gal porter on Wednesday. As I type this, I have 1.4L of yeast starter in front of me, with the plan to propagate a second step/batch of starter tomorrow. My plan was to over propagate tomorrow so...

    Star San in the UK

It's well regarded here that tap water, with or without boiling has high alkalinity. I would like to take a pH test, but I haven't any strips, and it's common knowledge. Simply put, I would like to cast aside a batch of water for sanitizing, but as you well know, Star San doesn't like...

    How safe is hose water?

Brewing outdoors has been a real pleasure lately. But I'm breaking my back getting water from the kitchen to the kettle. I really don't fancy running a nice new PVC hose through my house from the kitchen tap outside to it. How safe is hose water? It would be pretty practical for me to run a...

    Decisions...decisions....hazelnut porter

I've fiiiinally got myself a basic extract recipe for my first porter. Just wanted to run it through with you guys, I have my doubts with the balance though, could really do with your input. 6 gal batch 7.4 gal pre-boil 6.3% OG 1.067 FG 1.019 30 IBU 8.8lbs Amber DME (seems like...

Does untrained cold break help protect against infection?

So I read on here that krausen is a bit of a natural defense against infection when present, and I seem to have a lot of cold break I didn't filter out (see pic). Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if it too protects the beer from infection?

Spritzer that once was for showers - brewday

Its my brewday today. And I'm lower on sanitizer than I thought. I have this spritzer I've kept reserved for today - it once has eco-friendly shower spray in it. I've washed it dozens of times inside, in boiling water, in washing up liquid, but it still has a [tiny] whiff of that clinical shower...

Appropriate time to add a campden tab on brewday?

I've been looking into when people are using campden tablets and various other means to remove chlorine / chloramine for extract brews. Some are adding a tab to water before steeping and boiling Some are adding a tab just before pitching yeast. I'm leaning toward adding one to all of my...

    Reliable thermometers!

So I broke my trusty mercury thermo, and I was thinking of getting a digital on-the-cheap to replace it. Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Candy-Jam-Sugar-Deep-Fry-Kitchen-Temperature-Thermometer-Holder-FAST-DELIVERY-/400375403747?pt=UK_Kitchen_Accessories&hash=item5d383bd4e3...

    Burton-esque EPA Clone recipe

Hey folks, got my next brew here I just wanted to run it past you see if you think its ok. This is basically a Burton EPA clone, but I made some adjustments because I'm going full boil extract on this one! (never gone full boil before) Quite low bitterness on this one. OG 1.042 FG 1.012 3.9%...

Full boil / ale pail / heating element

Would love to go full boil for my second batch. I have the UK equivalent of an ale pail primary I've seen a few videos where brewers have installed heating elements into the bottom of the pail and done a full boil straight in the bucket then strained it over into another ferm. Is this safe...

    A Thankyou

From me to the seasonal experts here at HBT! My 1st homebrew was a total success and have cracked open my first after 30 days. None of this would have been accomplished without your fine advice and ridiculous patience with questions you've heard 758,000 times before. I also think the...

Bottle cond. time to temp ratio!

I cant physically get any higher bottle conditioning temps that 66. On average most days, beer sits around 62-64. Its been conditioning for 3 weeks now, but how much more time over a month would you add to conditioning when its 5-7 degrees lower than 70?

    2nd Brew, Pale ale advice!

Here is my second brew citizens :) This is far more important that the last, because I haven't paid for a dime, 50-60 people will be tasting it and I'm 'expected' to make this generic pale ale clone excellent. I welcome all your criticisms ;) 5.5gal Batch 2.3gal boil volume - 60 mins...

    Unorthodox split-boiling

So I really would like to utilize my small(er) 1.5 gal kettle for my second brew, I didn't for my first, and I'm not really sure if this method will exactly work :/ but here goes This is a 5.5 gal extract batch, on my first brew I only produced around 2.2 gal of wort and the rest was top up...
