Should I send my RO to Ward Labs?

I recently installed a BRS RO system in my brewery (ok, it's my basement bathroom). The 4-stage unit performs beautifully - 276TDS in / 004TDS out. Assuming I use 100% RO to brew, is it still necessary to test my water even though TDS is so low?

    Belgian yeast poops out

Hey all, I've cold crashed and fined (gelatin) beers in the past and never had a problem with bottles carbing up within a 4-6week conditioning period - i usually use wlp001 or notty. But I've got this Belgian blonde (wlp530) that I cold crashed and added gelatin and after 5 wks it's just barely...

Brew math, figure my gravity after adding H2O

I am BAD at math. I was once laughed right out of 7th grade algebra. No joke. It was terrible. I need a little help here with some noob brew math. If I have 5gal wort, with a gravity of 1.055 and I add 0.4gal of H2O, what is my new gravity. What is the formula for this problem?

    Another APA recipe, critique please

Hey guys! I've been playing around with this recipe for an APA. I like what big late hop additions have done for my IPAs and thought that I'd try it with a smaller beer, in lieu of dry hopping. Although this is NOT a clone attempt, the malt bill and hops is fully credited to Maine Beer Co who is...

    A message from Muntons

I've been curious about whether or not Muntons adds caramel/crystal to their extracts. I was always under the assumption that they did include some cara malts in there for color, flavor and head retention. I would even go as far as to factor 5-10% caramel in my recipe formulations when the...

    Bottle conditioning question

I there any harm letting bottles condition next to a forced air heating vent? Would excess heat potentially harm the beer?

14 days and Notty is refusing to clear

I have 5gal PM version of BM's centennial blonde in the fermenter. It's been fermenting with notty for 14 days @ 60*F. Gravity has not changed since day 5 - 1.012. The beer is still pretty hazy, I can just make out the numbers on the hydrometer. I'm wondering if its typical for notty to stay in...

Maine Beer Co. Peeper Ale clone?

I LOVE THIS BEER! If you've had it then you know what I'm talking about :rockin: SWMBO has been on me to try a Peeper clone for my next brew; the only problem is that there are virtually no clone attempts by others HBers to work off of. The best help comes from Maine Beer's website: Our...

    Dumb noob mistake?

I rehydrated a pack of notty in 98F water and let er sit for about 20mins. Then I totally spaced and didn't adjust the yeast temp to my wort temp. I'm guessing that the yeast was maybe 20F warmer than my wort when I pitched. 24hrs later i have no sign of fermentation. How bad did I screw this up?

Multi stage dry hop: is it worth it?

I'm attempting a FW wookie jack clone. The recipe calls for a 2 stage dry hop. 1oz each Amarillo/citra for 3 days, pull em out and then add another 1oz Amarillo/citra for 4 days. Why not just add 1.5oz each for 7 days? What are the benefits of multi stage dry hopping with the same hop varieties?

    Temp control post-primary

Just wondering how important it is to maintain ideal and consistent temps AFTER the first 5-7 days of fermentation. I know it's probably not cool to let it freeze or boil, but what about an 6-8 degree temperature swing?

    Crappy NB bucket lid

I purchased a new bucket fermenter from NB a couple weeks ago. On Tuesday I put a 5 gallon batch of stout in the new bucket along with a 1L starter of wlp007. After 24 nothing. No airlock activity at all. 48hrs... more nothing. So I took a peek inside the bucket. Opening the lid very slightly, I...

    Blow off obsesion

confession: I am absolutely obsessed with watching my blowoff tube. I just cant get enough of that foam as it chug chug chugs its way down the line. The gurgling noises and violent rumbles remind me of a summer thunderstorm. I even made the tube extra long and twisty to prolong the pleasure. I...

    mini-mash SWMBO's 18 quart stockpot?

Hey all, I was preparing to do a BIAB mini mash a la Deathbrewer but don't have the funds for another big pot. SWMBO has a really sweet 18q SS stockpot that looks like it'll fit the bill. I am just concerned about foreign matter (mostly soup, sauce and fat particles) ending up in my wort. WOuld...

Can you add maltodextrine to the primary?

I have an IPA that is sitting in the primary that finished a bit low - FG 1.012/OG 1.069 -I was anticipating an FG 1.016. I'm concerned that the beer will finish too bitter. Would adding MD to the primary help? Is it even worth the trouble?

Simple IPA suggestions with Columbus, Cascade and Centennial

I'm trying to work out a hopping schedule for my next brew. I'm new to Columbus hops, but from what I gather it's good for early bittering (high AA%) and can also be useful late in the boil, but in moderation. I don't think that hop additions should feel like rocket science, but for some reason...
