    Red Star Pryier Blanc Yeast

I've recently wanted to try a brut IPA, but I haven't gotten around to it. Having a dozen packets of premier blanc would be a motivator!

    LME, DME, Both?

Quick point of order. I've noticed a lot of people misuse the term "kit." A "kit" refers to a prepackaged set of ingredients (grains/extract, hops, yeast, etc) you need to brew a specific recipe. A kit can use extract (DME and/or LME), pre-hopped LME (like the type you reference), all-grain...

Georgia on my Mind Peach Wheat Brew

I've made a peach saison as a summer beer three times now, and I like the results. It does finish dry, so if you're looking for peach sweetness you'll need to find a way to add sweetness to your recipe. I preferred the drier peach flavor with the saison. I did not alter the hops I would have...

    Brown sugar....

These folks have good points about sugars, in general, not leaving behind a lot of flavor. To provide another option, I'll recommend using a malt that provides the flavor you're looking for in its profile. For example, a C-90 or Special-B type malt. Steep between 4oz and a pound of that...

    Planning for the Brew Year

First off, happy new brew year! I just posted a Year in Review thread, and I like how you are looking ahead into the new year. I usually brew with the seasons. Lighter beers in the summer, bolder, darker beers for winter. You need to brew a month or two ahead of the season to do this. I...

How do you repurpose used grain?

Compost, feed the birds/squirrels, or bake bread.

Got some math questions, any help please?

First, let's get some terminology down. When you say raise gravity "by one," a lot of us would ask "one what?" While specific gravity (the ratio of the density (i.e., mass divided by volume) between your liquid to pure water) is a unit-less scale, we refer to 0.001 on the specific gravity...

    Need some motivation and encouragement..

I went through the same thing after about a year of starting. I knew the basics, but wondered if I would ever get over that hump. I worked through that and now I just focus on enjoying my brew days and keeping it simple. My beer has gotten much better since. Can't agree more. Keep it...

    What went wrong?

Yeah, sounds to me like you haven't corrected for measuring gravity at different temps. As temperature increases, specific gravity drops for the same liquid.

Please critique my brew process and give advice on fermentation/bottling

Looks like most of these folks have already answered your questions, but I'll add a few general observations. You mentioned you mashed in at 168. That's fine when you're making a kit, but the temperature that matters is the temperature of the mash. 5 gallons of 168 deg water plus a certain...

New Brewer, Big Mouth Bubbler lid fix, and first brew.

The fix to the BMB problem is to flip the gasket upside down. You can find the fix on the Q&A section of the product page on NB. This doesn't sound like it will work, but it works like a charm.

How often do you brew a lager?

This year, 2 out of 12 of my batches were lagers, which is the most I've done in a year. I lager by brewing a 3 gallon batch instead of 5, and putting the smaller fermenter in my kegerator for lagering. Kegerator has digital temp control, so that part is easy. But, doing it this way produces...

    2017 Year in Review

Seems like kveik yeast is the new thing this year. I think I'm going to start making one each summer. It ferments hot and produces a very nice beer. To those brewers who are just returning, just learning, or barely finding enough time to get some brews in, keep fighting the good fight...

Big Mouth Bubbler Universal Lid solution

I haven't been posting much in the past year or so, but now that I'm on holiday, I'm trying to catch up. I had this issue but found the answer in Northern Brewer's forum. You can find it in the Q&A section on the product page now. The solution is to flip the gasket upside-down. Since I've...

    2017 Year in Review

Greetings fellow homebrewers. Today I'm done working for the year and I finished brewing for the year last week. As I sit here sipping a homebrew, I'm reflecting on a pretty good year in terms of brewing. I met an unofficial goal to brew once a month, brewing my 12th batch earlier this month...

    MD/DC Breweries?

I've been in the area for about 10 years now, and it's a great time to visit as a brewer! Here's my three tier recommendation: First, take trips to Right Proper, Blue Jacket, and Atlas. First two are great brew pubs, both easy to get to on metro. Atlas is the best packaging brewery in...

    Oak Aging Survey

Great point. I'm going to update the data to try to see if we can be more specific based on the type of oak used. From now on, if anyone posts, please include: Type of Oak (cubes, chips, spirals, others) Toast (light, med, dark)

    Oak Aging Survey

Hey Brewers, I compiled the data, and while I was hoping for some sort of epiphany, or maybe an existential moment, there weren't any dramatic conclusions. We suffered from small sample size, and we didn't really have any testable/repeatable metrics to go by. That said, this wasn't a waste...

    Oak Aging Survey

Thanks slym2none, just to verify, you aged for 5 days, right? Not 5 weeks/months.
