Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

If lower FG means bitter and sour better, then does that mean my OG was low? At a OG of 1042, sounds like I will end up with a 2 or 3% beer. If a FG is supposed to be above 1.000, then should a OG not be at least 1060 for an average 5% beer? Should I next time add more sugar and test OG...

Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

Just checked the yeast I used - my reply was wrong. I used Nottinghams brewing yeast. I'm now confused with some of the recent replies. First what is wrong if the yeast get the FG below 1.000 - doesn't the lower it go mean the higher alcohol. With a OG of 1042, wouldn't something like 099...

Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

Ok, I pitched newly bought wine yeast about 7 days ago. As my post original stated, this was the 2nd packet since the 1st was 2+ years past its expiry and was totally dead (wort sat for 3 days with absolutely no change in gravity with the 1st packet). After 24 hours of pitching the new yeast...

Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

OK, I got new dry yeast from the store yesterday and pitched it last night. Been almost 24 hrs and nothing? No krausen, no bubbles, no nothing?? Any ideas - is the wort bad? Even if so, why would the yeast not feast on the 1.1kg of dextrose I put into the wort?

Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

OK, been about 3 days now, and the yeast is DEAD as can be. No krausen, bubbles, and just checkerd with hydrometer and sg has not changed at all (was 1.042 3 days ago, and still is). So my question. Is it safe/ok to add new Lastly, I have one more packet of the same dead yeast - I suspect...

Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

Thanks for the quick reply. Forgot to add one more question. When I sprinkled the yeast, I did mix it around with the spoon for about 10 seconds. Am I supposed to stir after adding yeast? If so, do I really want to mix hard so it gets all throughout or just a little? Thanks

Can I add new/more yeast if 1st batch of yeast was dead?

I'm a newb to making beer. Only made two "beer kits" a few years ago, but now want to get back into it. Eventually I want to make my own beer from scratch, but first I want to experiment with the easy kits. I made a new batch today with a kit. The yeast was 2 years past its expiry date...

I've left my kegs and taps be for about 2 months - would they still be OK?

I thought the obvious question people would ask is: "why would you leave your kegs alone for 2 months". Though to answer the carbed wine question, the answer is why not! I've bought sparkling wine at the store and it is very good. Plus I have a 4 tap tower with 4 soda kegs, and since I...

I've left my kegs and taps be for about 2 months - would they still be OK?

I brewed a few beers and have them in soda keys, plus I also had one wine in the same soda keg. They have been connected to my co2 and bar taps for about 2 months with no use. I assume the beer and wine lasts in the kegs for a very long time, but being that I left the co2 on would that have...

The importance of hose clamps - lesson learned

I'm a newb to the homebrewing including my newly setup 4 tap beer tower with 4 cornies. When I was first setting it all up, I made sure to connect all the hoss to the quick connect adapters very well using hose clamps - also made sure hose clamps were used on the connection to the co2 bottle...

Does a tower do anything special or just look cool?

Trying to make Smirnoff Ice (or similar) - after 10 days not so yummy?

I calculate that my abv is 6.7% which is about right and where I expected. I already added 3 tsb of potassium sorbate - does this not kill off the yeast or do I need this k-meta? If my 3 tsp of potassium sorbate was enough to kill off the yeast, then sounds like I just need to sweeten the...

Trying to make Smirnoff Ice (or similar) - after 10 days not so yummy?

If I were in the US, then making a 19L corny with store bought vodka and mixed juices would be feasible. But here in Canada, a 750ml bottle is like $22 after taxes. I'm not sure how many 750ml bottles I would need to make a abv of 7% in a 19L corny, but I'd guess at least 5. Thus my 19L corny...

Trying to make Smirnoff Ice (or similar) - after 10 days not so yummy?

I've found a few different recipes on the net for a "cooler" flavoured malt drink and none said to add hops. The recipe I found did however say to use DME but my local homebrew did not have some so said I could use liquid malt extract instead - they did say thought that 1 lb of DME equals about...

Trying to make Smirnoff Ice (or similar) - after 10 days not so yummy?

I'm new to the homebrew thing. Recently got my 4 tap beer tower all plumbed to my four cornies - now I need to fill them with some good stuff. I've now made a total of two beer batches - one was done about 3 weeks ago and is not bad at all - the other is still in the primary and will be...
