I would mash the chocolate malt and add the cocoa nibs after the boil is done. I've heard of different ways to add cocoa nibs, that's one, the other is to add after primary is done to avoid aroma loss. I haven't tried it yet but I would brew it twice doing it both ways and take good tasting...
I've got the same setup in my cooler and haven't had any problems. I don't think it's anything to worry about as long as u keep it clean. I used a copper union to run it out to a brass ball valve and haven't had any issues. Looks great! Relax!
The roasted barley might make it a little astringent. try starting with half that and add 4 oz flaked barley. Just a thought for an adjustment for next time. Otherwise looks and sounds delicious! Let us know how it turns out! Cheers!
CYBI on the Brewing Network did a clone of Averys maharajah and it came out great! I'm pretty sure they cloned it. If ur going to do DIPA u should listen for some pointers about a beer like this then brew it up and see what happens. Just a thought. Good luck!
Another thought.. I just a Sodastream soda maker from Kohls for about $89. It uses a co2 tank with 1 liter bottles and carbonates water, then u can add their soda mixtures. There's cola, diet, lemon-lime, and orange so far. whoever wants to use thee Sodastream, they can buy their own bottles...
@chrislehr. I made a Dopplebock and I used 4# of pilsner DME and won a gold medal. I parti-gyled the beer and made an Alt with the second runnings. A cheap up grade for ur system is a 54 qt cooler from home depot was $15, a SS hose braid $7 and some tubing. Look for Denny Conn's batch sparging...
I have a 54 qt rectangle cooler with a SS hosebraid. Ive done 10 gallons of Dopplebock in it. I won gold doing batch sparge. I would go with at least a 12-14 gallon pot too. It's easier to do less but not when u wanna brew IIPA's and Belgian anything. Just a thought.
U could add a half pound of rice hulls to the mash before u sparge. I hear that helps with compacted grain beds as well as wheat/rye mashes. Tasty McDole uses rice hulls in most if his mashes, about half a pound per batch. I batch sparge in a cooler with a SS hosebraid and my efficiency is about...
