I have some WL 320 America Hefe Ale yeast in a starter right now. it smells sour. Haven't used this yeast strain before. I'm used to Belgians and I'm well aware of its smell.

Does it sound like it may be a bad batch ?

Most yeasts do not smell very good when they are fermenting. Let your starter finish then look for any signs of a pellicle. I would be pretty sure the yeast is fine.

i have used 2 different belgian yeasts that smelled awful, like limburger cheese awful...i would assume an american hefe is trying to copy a belgian hefe so I would expect it to smell bad too.
