I've been doing cell counts for all my starters this year and have come across what I think is an important observation for those that don't have the equipment to count cells. When I make stir plate starters in a 2L flask, I get the growth that the MrMalty pitching rate calculator predicts. When I make stir plate starters in a 5L flask, I only get ~75% of what MrMalty predicts. I don't know why this happens, maybe the 5L flask isn't getting mixed as well a the 2L?
If you've experienced fermentation issues with beers that you used a 5L flask as your starter vessel, try increasing your starter size or use multiple 2L starters for more predictability.
