I'd been under the impression for a while that diffusion stones were the best route for oxygenating wort but browsing through Wyeast's FAQ today I came across this:

31. Approximately how long do you have to shake a 5 gallon carboy to get oxygen saturation (8ppm)?

45 seconds of vigorous shaking.

32. How long do you have to run a stone with an aquarium pump to achieve O2 saturation (8ppm) in 5 gallons of wort?

5 minutes.

I dunno about you all, but spending less money and less time for the same result sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

This is pure O2 through a stone rather than using an aquarium pump, I got that confused, Wyeast is right

look a few questions above though:

29. What are optimal levels of O2 in wort?

10-15ppm

better than shaking but not providing the ideal ppm esp for higher gravity beers

What I meant to say was if you dont have pure O2, shaking is the better option.
