Lactobacillus brevis will produce both ethanol as well as lactic acid. Since L. brevis is heterofermentative , could it be used for primary fermentation to produce a Berliner Weisse style beer?

Absolutely could be used for a Berliner Weisse! I have used it and the tasting results from just the starter reminded me a lot of New Glarus' Berliner. I'd bet they use this strain. The flavor profile was practically identical. The Yeast Bay has this strain for sale through their online store, which is where I got mine. At $6.50, it's a pretty good deal.
