Hey All,

I was having a conversation with someone about Belgian Golden Strong Ale's and the topic of why they have names associated with the devil came up. I was trying to research the history of why these brews have that associated with them but I couldn't really find anything solid on why this is the case. Just wondering if a anyone knows...

Alcohol consumption has often been maligned throughout history as a vice and not a virtue. You'll find several references throughout Christian history where alcohol has been demonized as "da debbil." The stronger the beverage, the more of "da debbil" it's got in it.

I don't know if Stan Hieronymus is repeating legend or history in Brew Like a Monk. Probably legend, because he states that "the story goes that a brewery worker who had a test batch called it "the devil of a beer" and so it took its name from the Flemish word for devil, duvel".

Similar names evoke the style.

Because the definitive beer of the style is Duvel, means devil. It's tradition and a tribute .

From Wikipedia:
To commemorate the end of World War I, the Moortgats named their main beer Victory Ale. But during the 1920s, an avid drinker described the beer as "nen echten duvel" (a real devil in Brabantian Dutch) - perhaps in reference to its formidable alcohol content (8.5% ABV) - and the name of the beer was changed to Duvel.

It's like how double bocks beer names commonly end in -ator. It's a tradition.
