What's with the Whits fuzzy spots is this normal?

Was that grown in a container (opposed to the ground)? I've seen that the few times I've let some grow in 5 gal buckets. I don't know what it is but have a feeling that it may be a response to the soil drying out from time to time during the summer. You really have to keep an eye on the moisture when you grow in containers.
 
Yes its in a raised bed, each crown's in a 2'x2' 1' tall pine squares with open bottoms. Is it a sign of rot?
 
Are you sure the white stuff is "fuzzy"? It actually looks granular.
I first thought it was a mineral deposit - like salts from fertilizer...

It's a fungus of some sort. It wipes away and is soft. The only fertalizer I used is a cup of chicken poop per 4^3 ft box. No chems.
