what to use?

What do you all use as a container to ferment say a gallon test batch? I've got a hybrid in mind but don't want to make five gallons if it sucks.

Also I don't really have yeast culturing capabilities but can I still just pitch a vile? Can u over pitch?

I just use abought half a pack of dry yeast for test batches.

Others may do different but this has worked well for me.
