What is this?

I had a friend call me because he was cleaning out a barn and there were some kegs and homebrew stuff, and knew I might be interested. In addition to some kegs, There was this.
It has a 1.5 TC "drain" on the bottom, a 1.5" TC looks to be a return arm on the side, and a false bottom. It is just over half a 1/2bbl keg, so I assume it would be 6-7G full. Seems to small to be a mash tun.

I thought I might be able to use it to recirculate ice water for the counterflow chiller, but it must have had another purpose.

Thoughts?

That good sir looks like it was used for making another type of alcohol, the one in Appalachia they call White Lightning.

Definitely can repurpose it though!

Looks like a homemade MT. Wired pipe up top but we can only imagine why it was put there. Maybe a fill and or sparge apparatus. Interesting none the less.

Whatever the intentions, that thing looks unfinished, considering there's a naked hole in the side...

That hole is in the rim, below the bottom of the vessel, in the uncut portion of the keg.

I think when hops are harvested this year I'd use it as a hop back for a huge wet hop beer. My mash tun will suffice.

Agreed. That is almost definitely a grant. We used one at the brewery I interned at.
