So my buddy just bought a bunch of used beer equipment off of craigslist and has a 6.5 gallon plastic conical he'll sell me for $65. I do have carboys and plastic buckets for fermenting so I don't necessarily need another fermenter but it is cheap as conicals go.

What are the advantages for using a conical?

Some pros of having a conical:

being able to open the bottom to drop the trub and be in secondary fermentation in the same vessel.

if you have a racking arm you can bottle/keg directly from that port without picking up
any trub

The conical shape is a more efficient fermentation shape as there is less loss from trub and the dead yeast has less contact with the beer/mead/cider whathaveyou

Being able to harvest yeast, have complete oxygen free sanitary transfers/bottling is also great.
