Trimming roots questions

I am planting for the first time and stupid excited about it. I've carved out about 3x3 for each similar plant right next to my girlfriends flower garden. My questions is each spring when I trim the roots around the crown do I need to pull alllll the roots up? If so I am nervous this will mess with the flower garden. Any thoughts?

It depends, you have two choices. Trim the runners and remove them or they will grow, or put some metal (roof flashing is cheap) buried around each box. Hope it helps.

That certainly helps. My back is very disappointed in the answer though. How deep? 2 FT?

I think a foot should be fine most of my "runners" are on the top just below the surface.
