Just finished bottling a batch and was examining a yeast starter I made for conditioning another batch, it doesn't look like it's going to be viable. I'm feeling like an old man today with aching joints so I decide to lay down on the couch and think about it while leaving myself wide-open for a daddy nap at the same time.

My son is zipping around the love seat on his scooter and I decide not to say anything to him about being careful. Sure enough, no sooner are my eyes closed do I hear a thud and the floor shakes a bit. I open my eyes expecting to see a boy in the floor needing some attention to a new boo-boo. But no, he is still cruising along.

The Mrs enters the room and asks what fell. We are all bewildered. I'm ready to shrug it off but the Mrs doesn't accept that. We investigate and discover the source of the mystery.

A tree fell and hit the house. Other than some damage to the siding it doesn't appear to be any serious damage to the house. I moved what I could in the dark, the rest will be dealt with tomorrow with my chainsaw.

Stuff happens.

Wait, so how did the tongs end up in the carboy? :D

Best of luck with the clean up. I had to hack up a tree last weekend and while cathartic, not a whole lot of fun in the summer heat.

I still want to know that! Was it tongs for a micro greens salad?

When I first started reading this, I thought I made a mistake and was on that thread. I still like my idea of a wooden spoon and a chewed wad of bubble gum on one end. I don't think it will help with the tree though.

Start spinning the house to see if the centrifugal forces shoot the carboy out leaving the tongs intact...
Glad to hear there was no serious damage. Have fun with the chainsaw.

Sucks when you don't know why it happens.

Yesterday I was adding a few pieces of Stainless Sheet metal to my MIL's new (old) minivan. You know, just trying to make it look nicer then it did when we picked it up.

Well, the drill bit broke and the force of my pushing on it drove the broken end of the bit into my other hand. Not sure how deep it went, but I was pushing pretty good and the end of the bit was extremely jagged. So now I have a good bruise around the wound and the whole top of my thumb is a bit numb.

But it doesn't bother me much because I know why it happened: I was doing something stupid!

If I had been in the house reading a book and/or trying to take a nap I think the odds of me drilling my own hand would be pretty slim. (Ok, I guess that depends on how you define drilling...)

HEY OHHHHH! CAPSLOcK

It was one of those floor shaking thuds when the tree hit the house.

Our house is right on the wood line of a hill that slopes down steeply behind the house. There is/was a dead tree about 20 feet into the woods that I needed to cut down. Last night we had a storm front move in that was preceded with some high winds. These winds apparently decided they would do me a favor and fell the tree for me. Fortunately for us the tree was more decomposed than I thought. The top part is what hit the house and it mostly broke up into pieces with the remaining bit sliding down the edge of the house and messing up a bit of the siding.

Looking at it this morning I see that it came within 12 inches of taking out the back window. I consider myself rather lucky that it didn't do more damage.

Something like that happened to me recently (minus the tree). SWMBO and I were sitting in the living room in out SE Wisconsin home and felt the floor shake. I went to inspect and found nothing - no trees had fallen, nothing. We were puzzled.

A few hours later the news reports a small earthquake with an epicenter somewhere in central Michigan and that it could be felt here. Weird.

That quake was caused by trolls. I hear the LP is full of them!

I was near the epicenter. We are still rebuilding.

We get small (magnitude 3-4) quakes every couple years, but I'm almost always blissfully ignorant until I hear about it later on the news. The last one I actually remember feeling woke me up in bed, but I only felt one quick jolt and assumed SWMBO kicked me in her sleep.

I was in Las Vegas in May when an earthquake hit. It was strong enough to damage the local highway. I was in one of the casino towers. That sucker was swaying like a cattail in the wind. It was a little freaky.
