Taking a crack at the style for the first time, advice welcome.

6gal Batch
75% Efficiency
Expected OG 1.045
Expected FG 1.010
30 IBU

9lbs Maris Otter 3L
8oz Carastan 30L
2oz Simpsons Crystal 55L
1.87oz Styrian Goldings 5.5%aa leaf 60 min
1oz EKG 5%aa pellet dry hop 10 days
1882 Thames Valley Ale II (2 quart starter)

The starter smelled wonderfully british, I'm hoping this comes out well!

Would it be silly to add a touch of brown sugar to the boil for additional depth of flavor?

You can't go wrong with that recipe! Brown sugar is good too, will add some colour if that's important, and will add ABV without hurting anything plus a very small amount of caramellization. A good thing to try if you like the last recipe. I used to use dark brown, but don't bother any more in favour of playing with the crystal malt.

If you like it, tweak just one thing at a time.

20 min left in boil atm. 2oz of light brown sugar keeps me within the style's gravity range and I like what it brings to the table for english beers. Its going in at the 10 min mark!
