I'm going to be brewing my first batch using salt additions and I'm not sure how to go about preparing my water volume.

I'll be using ~8 gallons of water for this brew (5 gallon batch size). I'm picking up my RO water in 2 trips using a 5 gallon PET carboy.

My plan is to dump the 1st 5 gallons in a bucket, add my salt additions (gypsum & calcium chloride), dump 3 more gallons RO water in a second bucket, mix the total 8 gallons by dumping back and forth between the 2 buckets.

This water would be used for my strike and sparge (batch) obviously.

Am I on the right track?

While mixing in the manner that you are will dissolve all of your minerals I typically find that my strike and sparge water do not contain the same ratio of mineral additions.
i.e. a recent pale ale recipe called for the following:
Mash - 3.16 g CaSO4, 2.3 g CacL2
Sparge - 2.83 g CaSO4, 2.06 g CaCl2, .17 ml 85% Phosphoric acid
for a 5.38 Mash ph and to remain below 6.0 ph during my sparge.

Same here as above. I work with Bru'n Water and was surprised there were differences. Still, better than not adjusting.
