Hi HBT,

I am an extract brewer for now, but I want to make an oatmeal stout. There are extract recipes that use up to 1lb. flaked oatmeal without any conversion/mash, but there are also many who think this is a bad idea. Just in case, I considering a primitive mash by including ~2lbs. 2-row in a 45 minute steep instead of just my roasted barley, chocolate malt, and rolled oats. After the mash, I can do a poor man's sparge with a few cups of heated water.

Do I really need to convert the 1lb. oatmeal in this stout? Will this primitive steep/mash achieve any conversion? And what kind of efficiency should I use to predict OG? Thanks.

From looking around, it seems this is just no-sparge BIAB if I steep for 50 minutes at 150 then slowly raise the temp to 165 at mashout. People get fine efficiencies, and I'm going to give it a go. Advice still welcome about the oatmeal, of course.
