I am going to try this recipe in a couple weeks with 1 lb. of hops in a 6 gallon batch, though I expect to lose a lot of wort and hope to end up bottling 5 gallons. I created this based on some information on Heady Topper and Pliny the Elder. Do you have any experience with a brew like this? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Grist:
  • 15.5 lbs. Pale Malt
  • 1 lb. Munich Malt
  • 8 oz. Crystal 35
  • 8 oz. Carafoam
  • 8 oz. Torrified Wheat
  • 1 lb. Cane Sugar

Mash at 150 and boil for 90 minutes.

Hops (all pellets):
  • 1 oz. Columbus @ 90
  • 1 oz. Columbus @ 60
  • 1 oz. Columbus @ 45
  • 1 oz. Simcoe @ 30
  • 1 oz. Amarillo @ 15
  • 1 oz. Simcoe @ 10
  • 1 oz. Amarillo @ 5
  • 3 oz. Centennial @ 0

Yeast:
2 packs or equivalent starter of US-05 American Ale yeast.

Dry Hops:
  • 1 oz. each of Columbus, Simcoe, & Centennial dry hop primary post-ferment
  • 1 oz. each of Columbus, Simcoe, & Centennial dry hop in secondary

Estimated Stats:
OG: 1.076
FG: 1.015
ABV: 8%
IBU: 159

Looks good. I just did a 11 gal imperial ipa using all german hops

What is your pre-boil volume going to be? I usually shoot for a 7.25-7.4 gal pre-boil volume when I brew beer like this if I want to end up with 5 gallons.

Hey Chum, I typically boil off about 1.75 gallons per hour, lose about 1 quart in the mash tun, and 2 quarts in the kettle, though with 10 oz of hops, this will probably be more.
My volumes will be:
  • Mash with 23 quarts of water
  • Sparge with 25 quarts of water
  • Boil size will be about 9.4 gallons
Hopefully, I will get 6 gallons in the primary fermenter, 5.5 gallons in the secondary, and 5 gallons in the bottling bucket, though it might be a bit less.
