I picked up four ounces of Kohatu from Farmhouse a few months back but haven't been able to find much information on them. I decided to take one for the team and brew up a pale ale and report my findings.
Brew day was yesterday, simple grain bill of 9lb pale, 1lb vienna and .75lb c45. American ale yeast. I used Apollo as a bittering hop, and will be adding a touch of Apollo for flavor additions as well, just because i had a bit extra sitting around and wanted to get rid of it.
Hop bill:
.5 Apollo, 60 min
1 oz Kohatu, 7 minutes
1 oz Kohatu, 3 minutes
1 oz Kohatu and .2 oz Apollo, flameout
Dry hop will be 1 oz Kohatu, .2 oz Apollo.
The Kohatu hops had a very mild aroma, not nearly as pungent as the Apollo. Aroma was tropical, a bit limey and a touch sour/overripe. Hopefully the final product is good, I will post updates as the beer progresses!
