Multiple dry hop additions

Just curious what the benefits are of doing different dry hop additions instead of just one big one.

It allows you to do dry hopping for a longer time. If you do one addition, common wisdom is that after 5-7 days you may get vegetal or grassy notes from the hops, in addition to the hop aroma you are looking for. If you do multiple additions, you can add pull out the first hop addition after 5 days, put in the second hop addition, pull it out after 5 days, etc.

FWIW, I usually do one dry hop addition, for around 5 days.

I usually do one addition for about a week. I have a 10 gallon batch of a IIPA. I'm using 6oz in each half. I'm thinking I may do one addition in the bucket then a second in the keg.

It also allows you to use different hops to try to layer different flavors/aromas.

Would the flavors/aromas be any different than throwing all of the hops in at once though?

I wouldn't think there would be a difference. And I don't get the whole multiple sequential dry hopping either...
