Keg Etiquette

I have a question for those on homebrewtalk that would rather approach things by the book.

If you happen to come accross a cheap sanke keg and wish to turn it into a keggle, how do you make sure it was a decomissioned keg? Can you call the company to check and offer to return it? do you just trust the source?

Any input would be great, thanks.

http://www.kegreturn.com/ may be helpful. You should be able to locate the registered owner of the keg and contact them to see if it is a legal or not keg.
