Shank measures just under 7/8". Do I want any wiggle room i.e. 1" or leave it snug like it will be with 7/8"
Thanks. I didn't want to buy two bits to have to take back oneIf your 7/8" hole is exactly where you want it, then that's it. The only reason to go oversize would be to correct for a mis-drilled hole.
My guess is OP is drilling wood and using a spade or forstner bit. But to the question. Installed same shanks and use a 7/8 bit. What kind of bit, and what material are you drilling?
2x8 pine. Planned on using a spade bit with my drillWhat kind of bit, and what material are you drilling?

Sounds good. Clamp a backing board to it and it won't look like a cannonball hit it when you break through.
I have a 2x4 just for thatVery much yes, clamp a waste piece behind it. I used a spade bit and it can really tear through the back.
