Hi all,

I'm going to be brewing a largish IPA with New Zealand hops (save for some Warrior or Magnum for bittering). Still debating on whether to have this be a black IIPA or "standard". Grain bill:

80% 2 row
10% sugar
10% Munich
plus a little Carafa II (I'm currently leaning towards black IPA).

As for hops, I have available 4 oz each of Green Bullet, kohatu, motueka and Pacific Gem.

The inspiration was Green Flash's Green Bullet, which I think is fantastic.

Initial thought:

Magnum or Warrior for bittering
1 oz GB, .75 Pacific Gem, .5 each motueka/kohatu @ 10 minutes
1 oz GB, .75 Pacific Gem, .5 each motueka/kohatu @ FO/hop stand

Dryhop

1 oz GB, .75 motueka .5 each Pacific Gem/Kohatu (two times)

But I'm just spitballing here. I might consider using more kohatu as I've read that kohatu is not particularly assertive.

Bonus: any thoughts on whether to go with a standard or black IPA are also welcomed.

I made an IPA (not imperial) recently with all New Zealand hops. So far it smells fantastic. Why not bitter with the Pacific Gem? It is (primarily) a bittering hop.

I'm not a big fan of Green Bullet, but that's a personal preference. I think I would try to get some more Motueka in there somewhere though.

Black IPA vs. normal... I don't know. I guess I don't see the point of a Black IPA unless you're going to include some characteristics that you might normally find in a porter or stout - burnt toast, coffee, something a bit dry. One of the best Black IPAs I've had had notes of tobacco and leather. And honestly, none of those things sound like they would go with the lemon/lime/tropical fruit characteristics of the New Zealand hops.
