I purchased one after seeing the deal on instagram... Such a killer deal! There is a rear port for an element in addition two the 3 front ports!

If I hadn't just bought my Spike 10 gallon kettle I would definitely be buying this. Just to clarify, there is one rear TC port for elemnt, 2 TC tangential ports, and then one front TC port for a drain? I'd imagine one of the tangential ports could be used for a thermowell?

Cost of adding TC fittings will add up quick...

...but I already have most of that.

Dammit, i didn't need another brew kettle, I don't ever intend to brew more than 5G batches. Why did you post this? I couldn't resist!

I love my SSbrewtech BME 12 gallon, and it does well with BIAB, but I am considering using this as a electric HLT.

Looks like four ports to me, upper and lower tangents at about 4:00, drain at 6:00, element at 9:00.

Looks like a great deal. I'm using a 9.5 gallon kettle for BIAB, and I wouldn't mind adding a few more gallons, with gallon markers and a ball valve spigot. I'm just not sure I need the extra ports. The temperature gauge is probably more harm than good in BIAB, and I'd probably use Induction rather than an element when I move to electric. So I'd have a few ports to plug.

It's a great price though, and it looks like a beautiful kettle.

any idea how much the tc fittings would cost ?
1. temperature gauge
2. drain tube and inlet tube?

if someone could post a link, would be much appreciated...

thanks

Basically, the cheapest thing you could do with TC fittings would be a clamp ($7) gasket ($2) and blank cap ($4). So, $13 per port, $52 total. If you want valves, pickup tubes, etc, you could easily spend more on the fittings than you do on the kettle, but the possibilities are endless.

Question - I would need to add a port to the lid for a Steam Slayer, yes? I assume the upper port would be for a whirlpool attachment.

Thx

It would depend on how high the port is relative to your liquid level. The description says it has 2 whirlpool port so you could use one for a the steamslayer. I am waiting to see how high it it. I do BIAB and would probably have about 12 gal during the boil for a 10 gal batch.

Thanks for posting this. I have been looking for a 15 gallon (building a K-rims system) for my mash tun, and this was too good to pass up! it looks like they are all sold out now.

Yeah I ended up buying a second one... I would eventually like to go all electric so for the cost there is no harm in holding onto a second kettle for when I go all in

Was thinking the same. Figured I can HOPEFULLY find a simple controller for cheap and just try this as a 1 vessel machine and see if I can get it to work. Thought anyway, lets see if I can make it work. Now to start researching that.

Delivered and unboxed. This thing looks great! Somehow I expected something less just because of the price. Had to stop playing to join a conference call. :)

I'm not sure what I'd use the top tangental port for... It's all the way up at the top of the kettle, above where the liquid level would ever be, so it doesn't seem good for whirlpool. I'm not interested in the steam condenser thing, and it doesn't seem ideal for that, but may work. I think the two lower front ports will get ball valves for me, the side and upper tangent ports will get blanks for now, will be looking into an element and basic boil controller for using the side port.

probably for recirculating a BIAB mash more than whirlpool

What is the ID size of the holes on the drain and whirlpool ports of these kettles?

5/8" which seems to be a common size, i have several TC fittings that have that ID.
I’m away from mine at the moment, but they’re smaller.
Not sure where I’m going to find a pick up tube for the front hole. :p
(Made me think of this: https://www.healthline.com/health/lgbtqia-safe-sex-guide/response)

Maybe the pickup tube from SsBrewtech BME kettle works?
Should be the same fit as this:
https://www.ssbrewtech.com/collecti...p-racking-arm-for-chronical-series-fermenters
My non-BME SSBT chronicals came with TC ball valves that have 3/8" dip tubes that fit. They look to be the same dip tube that is used on those racking arms. I'm not crazy about them because i'd rather a 1/2" dip tube that fits in the 5/8" fitting, so i'm still looking around some, but at least have something that will work for now.

Hrm... I was afraid of that and it probably explains the fire sale and why they were so cheap, the hole should be .870 or 1.360 for 1" and 1.5" tri-clamp fittings.

https://www.glaciertanks.com/sizing.html

5/8" hole is for 3/4" tri clamp fitting.

Not able to find the ball valve, dip tube assembly on SSBT's site. @TallDan Did you buy the valve and diptube separately?

So you would need these two:
https://www.ssbrewtech.com/collecti...ts/ball-valve-1-2-id-1-5-tc-to-1-2-female-npt
https://www.ssbrewtech.com/products/tri-clamp-racking-arm-for-chronical-series-fermenters

Would probably have to go with a NorCal Brewing Tri Clover dip tube, maybe 2" x 2" w/ a 45 degree bend?

https://www.norcalbrewingsolutions.com/store/Tri-Clover-Dip-Tube-1.5-Inch-x-1.5-Inch-x-.5-Inch.html

Haven't found a 1" or 1.5" tri clamp valve with a 5/8" hole.

There are some valves with 3/4" ID, that may work:

https://www.glaciertanks.com/sanitary-ball-valves-ball-075.html

Looked at these sites:

https://www.brewershardware.com/
https://www.brewhardware.com/
https://www.norcalbrewingsolutions.com/store/Hardware-Tri-Clover.html
https://www.norcalbrewingsolutions.com/store/Hardware-Tri-Clover-Solutions.html
https://www.glaciertanks.com/sanitary-ball-valves.html

Maybe a Norcal Brewing custom solution is the best option, or maybe the ID doesn't matter much as long as it's close?

The 5/8" bore seems standard on most 1/2" ball valves fitted to 1.5" TC ports. That SSBT valve that I have has a smaller bore for the diptube. It does not seem to be available for individual sale, but if it's what you really want, you might shoot SSBT an email, I recently did that and got help with some different parts that aren't on their site. I may also sell mine since I'm moving to butterfly valves on my fermenters.

No worries. FWIW, I was looking at a custom bend tube from your site. Maybe 1/2 tubing - 2" A x 2" B w/ a 45 degree bend paired w/ 2 O-rings... just another idea.
I was thinking something like this. O-rings may be too thick, maybe just some teflon tape wrapped around the tube. I'll be ordering some stuff from Bobby this week anyway, so I might throw something like that on my order for this purpose.
